The 40 trillion dollar debt happened during the last 20 years while your peers were in charge. Ironically that's the cash value of your 401k's, but stealing those would make them worth $0.

How many of that generation will rely on ss and Medicare to make it through retirement? I'm not sure anyone in the voting blocks behind you care, and it will go away.

So what's the solution? If you don't need it, you don't get it like welfare? Raise the cap so higher income brackets keep paying into the Ponzi scheme? Or take it off the balance sheet completely and just print the $1200 a month y'all are owed?

The government stole from y'all and can't pay it back without stealing from us. The most conservative thing to do here is to stop paying ss, abd stop taking it out of every Americans check.

I don't disagree with Walsh's opinion, but I dont understand what he means by "First of all, social security is not something you "pay into.""

I think he means it's not a 'retirement account' that we paid into.

It might be a 'ponzi scheme' that we paid into...but we we certainly paid into it, and were forced to do so.

So after 90 years of people paying into it, we should stop now so you don't have to pay?

Ummm... no thanks.

Interesting that there is confusion about what SS is. I used to have a friend who worked at SS in Grand Prairie for some 40 years.
Anyway, 40T is too much. Any spare change we get, we need to use it to pay it down. That is how I paid off ALL my debts (house + cars). I have not taken any loans since for kids college or for another car. Trust me it took a LOT of sacrifice. If I can do it, why can't the country do it?

That by itself is not enough. Each citizen needs to help pay down the debt. I propose that each citizen above a certain threshold pay 5% of their Adjusted Gross Income back to the government to pay down the debt. Adjust that as needed. Yes, more taxes. Nothing is free.

Walsh is right that we didn't pay into it. They took it from us under threat of imprisonment.

With those threats, they made some meager promises in return.

You can't blame retirees for a flawed system.

Walsh has some weird fetish about old people not giving money to their kids, even outside of the crap system that is Social Security. Weird for a guy who preaches personal responsibility and being against entitlement.

The problem is that we have planned for it. I know exactly how much I will be getting when i retire next year.

There needs to be a phase out. Or an extension on how old you can be when you start to draw on it. It was 65 a hundred years go and has only been raised once to 67. Make it 70.

There were politicians who knew everything was a lie, and promised to fix everything. I voted for the few that said that they would fix things.
Can you believe that they lied to me?
The politicians today are lying to you also.
All politicians are liars who just want their share of the gravy train.
The next generation is going to blame you for whatever problems remain.
Get used to the idea.

Before I agree to pay down the debt, I want the government to agree to cut spending and I mean real spending!! The govt. has become the piggy bank for everything and everyone. Cut spending programs first to allow the people to have confidence that anything we pay toward the debt will actually have an impact.

By the way, I've been expecting my Social Security benefits to disappear since I got my first official paycheck at 16 and haven't counted on it being there.

It's bound to happen to those of us 'who don't need it".

But what a huge f you to people who act responsibly and even more fuel to the acting irrespponsibly crisis.

I'm going to start drawing at 62, even at reduced payments. I figure once I start, the harder it will be to take away.

I have worked and paid into SS, Fed snd State taxes since my junior year in HS. My husband and I started 'saving' shortly after we married in 1980.
I'm still working and paying into those 'programs' at 67, with no retirement in sight (although we're financially prepared).
PLEASE explain to me WHY I should feel guilt for what the LEFT has done to create what's happening NOW...
TIA

The government is NEVER going to voluntarily pay down the debt.

Whatever revenue your plan generates will be spent 5X over and the costs to the economy will probably equal that.

As good a strategy as any, but once you have a sizable portion of the electorate saying (or going along with) phrases like "they already have enough", they will find a way to cut you off.

The only way I would even remotely read this type of statement again would be with the following qualifications

- A kicker for those who had done right (and a lot). I've paid the max FICA/SS since I started my career 25 years ago. People like me should be rewarded in some way. Perhaps a cap on property tax. Have the state put skin in the game.
- Any President unable to run a balanced budget is immediately relieved from duties and will no longer be allowed to run for ANY public office. Essentially political treason.
- Any Congress attempting to pass legislation that will increase the debt (e.g. provide no spending offset), will be removed immediately.
-Term Limits for US Congress (max 2 terms)'

And the second step is to reduce Federal headcount by about 50%.

The thing about SS that people don't want to acknowledge is that SS is in the black. It has paid its way after all this time. I don't think it should have ever been done, but that doesn't t change the fact that its not the reason we have the massive debt!

I agree on the front end. Make it 70. But then you incentivize people to work longer, thus theoretically there are less jobs available for younger generations. This will be a hell of a paradox for your average Dumbocrat politician. Do they support more mass inward migration of foreign workers across our borders (thus limiting further job opportunities for those paying into Social Security), or do they pivot and reluctantly agree with Trump that the borders should be enforced?

Good times.

Nobody wants old people. They are the first demo to RIF. They earn more and are sick more. They also don't produce as much, on average.

So we force them to work longer but who will hire them?!

Grok
Net over 19962025. Social Security still shows a large cumulative surplus in its own books lifetime collections of about $30.6 trillion versus payouts of about $28.1 trillion, leaving the $2.6 trillion reserve. Relative to the $40 trillion gross debt, that reserve is about 6 percent. Relative to debt held by the public, the program was a net reducer of outside borrowing for most of the 30-year window and has been a net adder only since 2010, on the order of $1.5 trillion including interest on those later shortfalls. That is real, and it is growing, but it is a modest slice of the debt built by the rest of the budget.
The larger unfunded piece is prospective, not historical. Trustees project the combined trust funds can pay full benefits only until about 2034 (OASI alone around 2032), after which dedicated revenue covers roughly 7883 percent of scheduled benefits unless Congress changes taxes or benefits.

It's not a one-for-one thing. Imagine if we had mandatory retirement for everyone over 55. It wouldn't suddenly open up millions of jobs for young people. It would crash the economy.

1. Turn SS into a real retirement account where people have a balance that can be invested in the markets.
2. Raise the cap on SS tax on income (currently it's around $175k IIRC)
3. Trump accounts
4. Kill the communists

You're probably doing it right.

You have to look at it from a family perspective. If one of you retires at 62 (say your wife), then that changes the calculus for you as her spouse. To maximize both lifetime incomes, it makes more sense for you in this example to retire at 70 (or at least at full retirement age).

I think SS should be as simple as this.

Each time they take money out, it is put into an S&P500 index fund. That is it. It grows as per the market. After 30+ years it should be a tidy amount. Right now I don't know how they calculate what I get.

Sure - I don't mind giving up my Social Security.

As long as everyone now alive pays into Social Security at the same rate we did, with no expectation of ever getting a penny.

And then we can ship all the oldies with no money off on trains to "somewhere".

OR

You can go the Dems "fair" way and over the next 15 -25 years or so give no cost of living increases to the top 80%, so that everyone basically gets the minimum. So. even if you "contributed" 10X more earnings, you don't get a penny more.

So again, everyone is feeling the same hit.

What's a name for that, anyway?

Have had this conversation with my retired aunt and uncle who sail during the summers more than once. Complicated emotional topic, simple solution: if you're not below the poverty line or a total net worth of more than 5 figures, you don't collect any SS.

Thanks for paying in all those years, it's been a tax.

Kill new registrations and begin messaging that anyone under age 50 is ineligible to ever receive SS payouts and will also no longer be taxed.

In 3-4 presidential cycles it will have washed out of the system.
