"You know, inflation. Certain levels of inflation will also pay off that debt very rapidly. Very rapidly," he told TIME in an interview published Thursday, after the outlet pointed out has grown by about $11 trillion over his five years in office. In response, Trump first blamed Joe Biden, then the Fed, then hinted at a plan he wouldn't share.

"I know I'm the best in the world," Trump said. "The best - I don't want to tell you what those means are, but you can pay off the debt through other means. But the one thing that you can do is pay it off through growth, and we've never had growth like this."

Later he circled back, saying "the growth is going to pay off the debt" and that the Fed's hikes were "hurting our country more than inflation is hurting our country."

He didn't say what level of inflation he had in mind, or whether he wants the Fed to tolerate more of it. Earlier in the same interview, though, he blamed Biden for "the biggest inflation in history" and said he "inherited the greatest inflation in history," adding that "the only thing I have to get down now is the gas."

Wow. He just came out and said it didn't he......

What's F16s opinion, how much more are you willing to pay in gas, groceries, insurance, home repairs/loans, appliances, etc to pay off the $40Trillion. 5%, %10, maybe 20% or more?

He told everyone when he was running for 2016 that he'd make the printers go "bbbbbbrrrrrrrr", and he did. He also said he was the "King of Debt".

People should always listen when liberals tell you their game plan.

He's not wrong. Letting inflation rip is a way to pay off the debt. it's the consequences of doing it that are the problem. Kinda like the Weimar Germans went through.

Who knows, maybe this is his best pitch he can come up with before the election......telling the hard truth. i.e. -
The country is insolvent, we need to think creatively.

What's the alternative?

The Democrats that embrace political violence, Islam, woke culture, and mass immigration.

You can be annoyed at one and still never vote for the other.

Well when the best guy runs, that doesn't have any single negatives, then I'll vote for that guy.

Until then, I'll put up with whatever bull **** I have to get the important **** done I care about.

The cultural/social stuff & Anti China is most important to me and I'll take the financial hit.

I even support the Iran war. I didn't want to get involved with it but here we are so we gotta go win. Iran with a nuke would have been catastrophic.

I can even be a bit "not pro Isreal" and still support the war.

There are supposed Republicans and conservatives that would rather us lose a war than have trump win it.

More than mass immigration... open borders, which led to extreme inflation during Bidens term. Kind of ironic.

Most people don't have a clue what he's talking about also they don't understand what it means to them.

He's ignoring the risks associated with this plan:

Spiking Interest Rates: High inflation forces central banks to raise rates, making future government borrowing much more expensive.
Indexation Limits: Mandatory spending like Social Security and other entitlements adjusts upward with inflation, offsetting budget savings.
Loss of Credibility: Tolerating inflation damages investor trust, which drives up long-term bond yields and worsens future deficits.

That's exactly why he keeps pushing for lower rates in an inflationary environment. He wants to fan the flames of inflation even more to "buy" his way out of the massive debt hole he keeps digging. In his mind, inflation is a nuisance that can be dismissed through higher growth. In the real world, inflation is a thief that steals from your hard-earned wage and wealth gains and needs to be minimized through balanced fiscal and monetary policies.

This isn't going to help him in the midterms. He's in for a shellacking.

You are also ignoring the fact that higher T-bill rates affects much more than making future government borrowing more expensive, it makes servicing our current debt more expensive.

No, bonkers is the proper word, I think.

That would make sense…..if we stopped spending and taking on new debt. We won't though so it will grow with ever increased spending (since a dollar will pay for less every year) and increased interest.

Most real estate is financed for 15+ years at a fixed rate so inflation is the friend of the property owner (borrower)

Of course none of that applies to government finances

Is too late, man - the social security + Medicare hole is just too deep. We have tens of trillions of future spending locked in and no easy way to reduce it because half of seniors don't have any retirement savings.

I'd still love a Javier Milei to take over, but the man is just a smart conservative economist, not a miracle worker. we needed somebody like him to implement sound, conservative economic policies thirty years ago. Now, our debt has ballooned to 40+ trillion, the annual deficit has hit 2 trillion, interest payments have hit 1.5 trillion, and the bond market is choking just looking at the situation and refuses to let longer term rates drop below 4 or 5%. this means the massive future deficits we can't avoid are going to be increasingly expensive to finance, as will the existing debt that we'll roll and refinance.

The only way out of this that doesn't require the system to break and cause immense suffering is AI and robotics bring about Elon's world of abundance and the GDP doubles in the next decade. That's it. So write your congressman and demand a data center in your backyard because nothing else stops this train.

He could also be playing coy.... FDR revalued gold overnight. Trump could do the same.

Quote:

The official book value of gold on U.S. government books is $42.2222 per fine troy ounce.

$50,000 oz goes along way to paying the debt off.

The only ones that would complain are the people who don't own any. Central Banks, China, Russia, Family offices, Insurance companies, Tether, some F16 posters, etc would be over joyed.

Quote:

Tether, the issuer of the world's largest dollar-backed stablecoin, purchased more than six tonnes of gold in the first quarter of 2026. This brings its total gold reserves to 132 tonnes, which, at current prices, are valued at nearly $20 billion. The Q1 purchases follow earlier acquisitions of 21 and 26 tonnes in the fourth and third quarters of 2025, respectively.

In just 12 months, Tether's gold supply doubled, while its value tripled over the same period.

Immaterial, having a degree in economics is not a cognitive argument. I may disagree w/ President Trump on this point but a degree in economics is useless. For example AOC has a Bachelor of Arts degree, double-majoring in international relations and economics, damn a friggen double major & still stupid as a box of rocks,
Look at the orators in our republics; as long as they are poor, both state and people can only praise their uprightness; but once they are fattened on the public funds, they conceive a hatred for justice, plan intrigues against the people and attack the democracy.

this worked, LOL:

*Consumer prices today are 27.2 percent higher than they were in January 2021.
*Something that cost $100 when Biden took office now costs about $127.
*Biden bears the lion's share of the blame for that cumulative increase.
*The consumer price index rose 21.4 percent from January 2021 to January 2025 (Biden's term), while it has risen just 4.8 percent since Trump took office.
*In other words, of that $27 in rising costs, about $21 came on Biden's watch.
