I'm sorry, but this is wrong regardless of whether you voted for Trump. The Washington Post is reporting that tens of millions of dollars from DHS money Congress appropriated for things like border protection and customs enforcement has been redirected to pay for taxpayer-funded advertisements that look and sound remarkably like campaign ads promoting Trump.

The administration can call them "public service announcements," but taxpayer dollars should not be used to produce what amounts to political self-promotion for the sitting president, Republican or Democrat.

I think we all know that if a Democratic administration took money intended for border security and used it to blanket television with ads praising Biden, Obama, or another Democratic president, Fox News would be running the story 24/7 and Republicans would be demanding investigations before the day was over. Conservatives should be willing to apply the same standard when our own side is in power. You don't have to suddenly become anti-Trump to say this is an inappropriate use of taxpayer money. If we only care about government waste and abuse when the other party does it, then we don't actually care about government waste and abuse we care about who gets to do it.

Fine, throw WaPo out. AP, Reuters and ABC are independently reporting it, ABC cites the federal contracting data, and Republican senators are criticizing it, too. Let's argue whether the expenditure is appropriate rather than pretending the expenditure didn't happen.

Government funded anything is bad.

Government funded military and judicial system, also bad, but necessary.

When you say folks would be mad if a Dem president reallocated money away from border security, can you please detail what the Biden admin spent their border security money on? Because it wasn't to secure the border.

And Trump has completely closed the border and Dems won't let ICE do their jobs, so this seems like a good use of excess funds.

But seriously, where did the money Dems have for border security get spent?!

So private toll roads everywhere, mandated PID and MUD districts vs towns and cities? Private schools, so if you are poor then no education for you.

Can you work out how this no-government-funded anything is supposed to work?

Bingo.

Plus, why are they just now complaining about it? DHS was running these ads under Noem within 2-3 months after Trump took office.

Sorry. Thought it was implied that we were talking about the federal government. I would have thought that was clear, but thanks for prompting the clarification.

The ads are most definitely sus and I personally think conservatives should be upset after complaining about "waste, fraud, and abuse" for the whole first year of President Trump's second term. Then again, I'm also of the opinion that campaigns should just be publicly funded (can be voluntary like the $3 thing on income taxes). People don't choose to contribute? Then learn to campaign within your means. In the current case, conservatives need to walk the talk and act like they claim to believe. The never-ending what-aboutism is lazy and just furthers the "hypocrite" image the right has.

I was not clear on your intentions, but the federal highway system says hello, though one could argue there is indeed a military component of that.

To your point and I oft agree with your takes, more decisions, funding, taxation, etc should be at the local level.

I would gladly pay the taxes I do (we maybe not gladly) if I had direct sight into how the dollars are spent.

For my little carve out of federal funding, I see it actually making an impact at a micro local level. The waste and to an extent the abuse that still occurs in these well run programs is still unacceptable, I can at least see the end result, benefit.

Localized accountability that is tied to the taxes paid by the locals closes a big loop.

When you start to criticize your side of the aisle and hold them accountable via voting, we can at that point address whataboutism.

Until then it's just a slimy way to not address the ills of your comrades.

Independently reporting it....not sure if you understand what that means in media context.

It's not even a campaign ad. Remember when America Invests and Recovery act funding was used for signage all over the country for highway projects, and millions of those funds were used to run ads on MSNBC for PR purposes?
Quote:

The appropriate expenditure of taxpayer funds by the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) is of the utmost importance to the committee. This week, multiple news sources have reported that in September 2009 DOL spent $495,000 in so-called "stimulus" funding to hire a public relations firm, McNeely, Pigott, and Fox Public Relations, LLC ("MP&F"), to promote Job Corps' "existing and new training initiatives in high-growth and environmentally friendly career areas." We understand this contract used taxpayer dollars to purchase advertisements on MSNBC during "Countdown with Keith Olbermann" and "The Rachel Maddow Show." Despite the fact that these funds were made available as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Actlegislation President Obama said was critical for immediate job creationan examination of public records show that the contract that resulted in the advertisements on MSNBC created no jobs. Upon further review of public records, we have found that DOL, since 2009, spent almost $2 million on public relations services from MP&F, resulting in the creation of one job in the last reported quarter.

I remember. Olbermann, LOL, as though his viewers at the time needed reinforcement of the brainwashing narrative. What I don't remember were leftists, in the media or online lamenting that crap, let alone the obamacare propaganda we also paid for. And these signs were all over the interstate system for years with a strikingly similar symbol to "O" for Obama campaign materiels.

I think the media is mainly concerned this counters some of their 'the economy is crap/world sucks thanks to Trump narrative.'

Trump is really good at using Dem's own playbook against them.

The Media is really good at taking advantage of people's short memory span and saying that the Dem's own playbook is unfair, because people forget when Biden was using it.

If people don't like when the government does these things, vote for representatives that will change the law, so that neither side can do it.

The Dems have used the captured bureaucracy to set up two sets of rules: one for Dems and one for anyone that is not a Dem. Trump continually tells the bureaucracy to pound sand.

They have now focused on trying to use the judiciary to do the same thing. It will take more effort to weed out the problems in the judiciary, but this will also come to pass at some point, one way or another. And "another" isn't good for anyone.
