Ok, I don't think having ac is a constitutional requirement.

However, and flame away, I think we should air condition the prisons - for the guards. My best friend from high school was a long time guard and he said the kitchen would get to be about 130 degrees.

This is actually something I agree with. First, as said, the people that work at the prisons shouldn't be subjected to no air conditioning in Texas. Second, heat makes people more violent, especially if they're the types who would be in a prison.

Is the poster "NO AC Dammit" still around?

Would love his take.

Obama judge of course.
"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." - Sir Winston Churchill

TDCJ should put in all swamp coolers.

I'm just going to guess, but smoking cigarettes was also perfectly legal (and acceptable) in the dorms back then, too.

Those handheld fan things should be sufficient. Might keep some from wanting to return to prison once they get out.

That only occurs in ad-seg...a relatively small percentage of total population. Ad-seg is also mostly heated and cooled.

A/C is life support in Texas. Mine is currently on the fritz. It sucks.

Also, I can't imagine what the cost to retrofit. Those older prisons would be. It might be cheaper to build a new one the new retrofit one.

The next lawsuit will be for mold and other humidity/water vapor transmission issues that arise from retrofitting a facility for a/c that wasn't designed for it.

Texas was already working to do this and the order seems performative.

https://www.tdcj.texas.gov/ac/index.html

The legislature gave them air conditioning funding over the last several sessions and they've already been working to renovate and install.

The lawsuit is practically moot, although I'm sure there's always the possibility the TDCJ could just stop the installs absent the order but unlikely to happen.

I don't necessarily disagree about air conditioning. But a judge should have no business dictating whether or not Texas should have air conditioning in its prisons, unless he personally will pay for the installation costs, maintenance, and electricity costs.

You're dating yourself. All dorms at Texas A&M have been air conditioned since Hart got it in 2002.

In 1974 all petroleum engineers were assigned to live in Hotard!!! 1974 Hotard had no A/C and no anything else. I took one look at it and was ready to try living in the prison.

F the prisoners.

Don't want to go without AC? Don't go to prison.

If I were the warden, I'd turn the thermostat on the AC to 1 degree below the high predicted for the day. Prison isn't supposed to be easy, they need to be out picking up garbage and cleaning invasive plants out of waterways instead of lifting weights, playing basketball, etc. anyway.

So its now a constitutional right for all people to have AC. Where was this right when I was italy in july?

Yes, 1983 freshman dorm - law hall.

And, unlike prisoners, I wasn't there during summer.

You know - it wasn't really the heat that bothered me - it was the humidity. My school papers were absorb water and feel wet.

I went to an elementary school without A/C.

None of the nuns died or collapsed from heat exhaustion.

Cry me a river.

No amount of logic is going to convince the illogical that orange man isn't so bad that we should all vote for socialists in 2026. He wants to vote for a socialist who wants to kill the O&G industry, dismantle capitalism, open the borders, ban guns, legalize abortion up to birth, allow men to play girls sports and hang out in women's locker rooms, and pay for trans surgeries for little kids. Actually......

Many of the prisons were designed without AC and designed in a manner that allowed for pretty decent ventilation via trade winds. I'm sure retrofits, etc. have changed things some, but one of the reasons why it seems so much worse today is that houses and buildings aren't designed without AC as a component, so when the compressor takes a dump it gets miserable.

Look at some of the older houses and you'll see markedly different floor plans and house orientation compared to the cookie cutter master planned community houses.

That being said - give me AC every day and twice on Sunday over not. But I"m also not in prison, and the prisoners can suck it as far as this taxpayer is concerned.

I dunno, we did fine with no AC in the Houston summers my first 20 years of life.

Sit in front of a box fan and sleep as much as you could.

You might need to judge shop to get the government to pay for your A/C.

If it is cruel and inhumane punishment for prisoners then anyone who doesn't have A/C is being subjected to cruel and inhumane treatment. Thus the government should be forced to provide air conditioning for everyone!!!

Isn't that correct, Mr/Ms Obama appointed judge?
Psycho Bunny
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Sheriff Joe Arpaio philosophy, if the U.S. service members can be placed in the desert without A/C so can the criminals.

So tired of bleeding hearts giving a damn about criminals, when these criminals didn't give a damn about the victim.

Anyone who wants criminals to have A/C, let them come live with you.
