Rainy day fund is already above its cap. Sales tax revenue up 6.2%. Oil tax up 9%. Overall, up 1.6 billion above forecast.

How about some freaking property tax relief? Abbott needs to put the money where is mouth is.

Property tax relief is never happening. Republican politicians in the state love to talk about during elections but nothing will ever happen.

As long as the SOH stays in turmoil, Texas wealth continues to overrun with serious coin. Of course I predicted this and was told how much we needed the SOH by the war crowd.

There isn't a state property tax, only local city/county property taxes. Abbott has no control over this.

This is simply false. The homestead exemption has gone up 9x since Abbott was elected. Local appraisal districts and public entities have spent more and more and more based on soaring appraisals but the legislature has worked to keep it in check. Now he's talking about eliminating school property taxes. No real indication of how he plans to pay for education but that's a different topic than your assertion that state republicans havent done anything here.

Like many taxes people never really see them because they are buried. If everyone at the end of the year had to write checks for taxes it would be more obvious how bad this has become.

Instead it's just a line on their mortgage payment or they never see it with a rent payment.

It's so ridiculous for example seeing people who have to downsize as they get older just to be able to afford their taxes.

This is local taxes and local spending.

Texas actually needs to give proper funding to txDOT. Some of our highways are badly behind in needed upgrades. Some of our FM and ranch roads are in horrid condition

Every tax exemption that hits a ballot passes by at least 80%.

40% of home owners in Texas pay zero property tax. Over 60% of senior citizens pay zero property tax.

Yeah, recent years have seen our area come up with a Taj Mahal city hall and a law enforcement center complete with locker rooms and a gym (that apparently none of the fat asses use). New jail underway at the moment.

They pay zero. Once you apply the $140,000 over 65 homestead exemption, plus other exemptions that many seniors get, the exemptions exceed the appraised value of their home. And appraisals don't get frozen. Actual tax gets frozen, not the appraisal.

The $140k exemption only applies to school tax. Over 65 is frozen not zero.

So you want more state control and funding over LOCAL spending? Or do you not know what property tax is and how is collected and spent? Or are you just telling at the clouds.

Maybe we should lower the state severance tax on oil production

Property tax relief is never happening. Republican politicians in the state love to talk about during elections but nothing will ever happen.

Abbott made sure to say very clearly that property taxes are increased by local governments. He could not have been saying more clearly, "Yes, I know property taxes have increased greatly since I've been governor, but hey don't look at me, I'm just as innocent in all of this as you. It's your local people who you need to be upset at. That's why you should still vote for me."

I mean, he's just the governor after all. It's not like he's got a conservative state House or Senate that he could work with.

Oh wait.

You can file an affidavit with your county appraisal district to defer the taxes until you move or die at an annual 5% interest penalty. If you die while owning the home, the deferred balance plus interest will be taken out of your estate. If your wife is at least 55 when you start this, you can continue deferral after your death if she wants to stay in the house.

If you don't need to or care to pass that onto heirs, you can get away with not paying property taxes until your death. The state will simply get back what you owe from sale proceeds of house and/or your estate if sales proceeds don't cover the balance owed.

So, there you go.

Y'all aren't getting property tax relief until you add a state income tax which would then make up any cuts you got from property taxes.

You are going to pay your current tax bill regardless of how it's billed.

Pick your poison because it's going down the same no matter how you take it.

Here in Florida, we have a ballot measure in November that would raise the homestead exemption from $50k to $250k next year, then up to $500k by 2030 (excluding school taxes)

Have seen that. How are the loss in tax receipts going to be made up? I believe I read hotel taxes and other avenues...basically non-Floridians would pay for it? That's a bold strategy.

See my post above. You don't have to pay taxes if you don't care what happens to your estate after you die.

If we still lived in Texas, my wife and I were going to seriously consider it once we turned 65 for the enormous extra cash flow it would bring per year.

For what? This has been well studied and documented, increasing money per student does nothing. NOTHING. Its over, the science is settled. Move one, let it go, learn to read some studies.
