A severe storm rolled through Bexar County/ San Antonio at 9:00 Friday night. It knocked out half of the city's electricity from what I hear. The thunder was so loud and the wind was so strong that I had to herd my dogs into the closet that goes under the stairs which is enclosed. Then the power went out. I gathered all of my flashlights, including two battery-powered lamps which kept us out of the dark. We were up all night.
Eventually, the storm passed but the lightning was everywhere as the thunder and rain moved south. The city was pitch black. Tree limbs were scattered all over. When I went out with a flashlight to assess the damage, I found that my 50 ft. American elm tree was reduced to a 20 ft. pole. My heart sank because I planted it 30 years ago as a seedling. It was a beautiful tree. A neighbor later told me that officials were pondering whether the tornados were F-0 or F-1.
When the sun came up, we saw the real damage. None of the houses had damage, but every house that had trees had severe damage to those trees. Many had fallen into the streets. Debris was everywhere. For the next two days, the sounds of chain saws penetrated the neighborhood. City crews were quick to perform emergency pick up yesterday. They have a long way to go.
In the meantime, none of us had electricity. No air-conditioning. No fans blowing. No COFFEE! No lights. No refrigeration. It was like living in Cuba, except we have HEB (smiley face didn't post) So, last evening, two crews with 3 bucket trucks arrived in our neighborhood to repair the transformers in two locations. They worked until sundown. I asked the officer standing by if they would be coming back in the morning, and he told me they were working 16 hour days.
Yesterday I drove thru the neighborhood. Almost every house had piles of limbs stacked at the curb. Stop signs with poles were lying on the ground, pulled out by the strong winds. Streetlights were out. Massive trees were destroyed. I still can't explain why there was no house damage, other than to say this is an older neighborhood and the houses were built better back in the day, I suppose.
I resigned myself to another dark, warm night. We were sleeping outside on my patio loungers when a light hit my eyes (3:20 a.m.). I thought the sun came up rather quickly, but I found the lights were on in my house, across the street, everywhere! The first thing I did was get online to let you know I AM OKAY! I won't have time to post a delayed Sunday Funnies because I have too much to do today. Thank you all for your concerns and great comments. I will let them soak in when I return to this thread later. I am either going back to sleep or I am going to return my food to my refrigerators when they get cool enough for that. I have a downed tree to deal with tomorrow and a broken window to repair in my living room. I haven't been upstairs yet. It's probably okay but the north window in the attic was open so who knows how it got rearranged by the wind.
