Now ranchers will be able to sell the meat they butcher and process to the public. The big 4 processors - Tyson, Cargill, JBS USA, and National Beef - wont be involved

This seems like a good thing. Thoughts?!

Per another source:

President Trump posted on Truth Social this morning (August 28, 2026) that he is directing legal documents to be prepared so farmers and ranchers can process their own meat.

I've been saying this for years.

Remove the red tape for meat processing and you will have the 20 head herd cattle ranchers producing high quality proteins that sell fairly priced at the local level.

Make meat processing the new welding career.

Right now you have the 50 acre (20-30 head) cattle rancher selling their heifers either as replacement or they go to the sale barn. That has been the process forever because the control over processing makes the intentional barrier to entry.

Allowing the processing to happen increases competition, drives down price and brings more ranchers into the game.

My assumption will be that this might lead to processing cooperative.

Right now, a guy who is a hobby farmer with 50 head of Cattle, can't afford to set up a processing plan for that few of Head of animals. Even a 300 Animal guy can't do it. So at that point, I think it becomes community based. Regardless, I'm excited to see this.

Ok. This can be great for the average person not in a city.

So now the real question. How do you do this without losing oversite to health and safety. Because I don't think the average person on here understands what inspected facilities have to go through in time, cost, and requirements.

This is a step in the right direction.

Cattle and beef prices have been disconnected for years in favor of the beef producers.

It's not unlike the disconnect between timber and lumber markets. But unlike the beef industry, there aren't many regulations that prevent woodworkers from milling their own wood.

You don't HAVE to buy patented varieties from Bayer, Syngenta, DeltaPine, etc. Go get heirloom or open pollinated varieties and you can save your seeds.

This is like complaining that you can't copy and sell software when you only paid for a license to use it.

I agree at some level, but disagree more.

Corporate level hunting trips..... we have all done them. So you shoot your animal, drive into the small country town, and fill out the toe tag information at the small galvanize siding processing house. Nothing too crazy, just quarters, select cuts, ground and sausage. You take a look inside and it is stainless steel everything, a walk in cooler and some aprons. A man and a sharp knife that has a name.

There are also the private hunting lodges with amazing processing kitchens.

Give this thing 10 years and it will be huge with livestock. When the democrats take over, they will process the horses because that is par for course.

In my opinion, the cattle rancher/farmer lover their animals. There is a sense of pride in what they raise. The rancher will put the same level of care into the processing, finishing the job all the way to the table. The rancher's name is on that package and that means something more than money.

I'm not a cattle guy, so excuse my ignorance. I can link web pages of several producers in my area who sell straight to consumers today. And I know of small local processers where I can take a steer today and get processed, and take the meat home.

What's the big difference?

EDIT: https://www.panhandlemeatprocessing.com/

Their web site says inspected by the State of Texas, but not USDA

I'm on rancher twitter and I've seen several cost breakdowns that show it's impossible to compete on price with the big packers. I'm in favor of this for sure, but I doubt the market for higher priced meat will be very big.

We've been buying meat this way for years. Not sure how allowing farmers to do the processing themselves is going to provide a radical new service that wasn't already available.

2) Trump is doing way he always does (sign a pointless EO that accomplishes nothing), this is just red meat for the mouth breathing deadeners going into the election. Pass permanent legislation, not an EO that can be easily overturned.

All I can guess, is that it allows individual ranchers to slaughter their own beef, instead of taking to a central facility, like the one I posted above.

https://www.panhandlemeatprocessing.com/

I can't see how this helps small producers. If I take less than 100 cows a year to market, it's easier to let an existing guy do it, rather than stand up my own facility.

Pages of folks saying that this a positive and the impacts it will have through less government regulation, and the response is to mock people who want MORe regulation then summarily dismissing the EO as having no impact with nothing provided to back that up?

Seems like "Trump is doing way (sic) he always does", ending government overreach, broadening freedoms, looking out for everyday Americans and… winning.

Go Trump!

For those with concerns, google Gabe Brown talking about opening up a chicken processing plant and the hoops/hurdles they had to jump through to get to a level they could sell direct-to-public intrastate, and not even interstate commerce. Joel Salatin talks a lot about this due his dislike of the "US-DUH" (USDA) and their overbearing regulations. No one wants to go back to the disgusting meat processing from the book, "The Jungle", but like many areas we have overburdened production through big money backed lobbyists and bureaucracy. Multiple levels of deregulation is needed in this space and across the board in DC.

While I would like to see more to the specifics on this scope change, I'd say Good [start,] Trump.

An old rancher once told me that his wife had to remind him that he was in the grass growing business, not the cattle growing business.
Lot's of organizations telling people they can grow a "herd" on 10 acres.
Lot's of appraisal districts also telling how many head they have to run to maintain ag exemption.

They cannot butcher and package meat they raise and directly sell it to you. You typically have to buy 1/4 (or more) live cow and get it processed by a 3rd party butcher.

If a rancher could take that animal to a small local plant, get it processed legal, and sell the packages himself, he could sell a couple steaks or five pounds of burger to whoever walks up.

He could reach a whole lot more people, farmers markets, farm stores, restaurants, even online.

He'd get paid more regular instead of hunting around for somebody willing to buy a quarter-cow. And he could compete a little with the big packers at the retail level instead of only selling the live animal.

Gotcha. We always buy 1/2 a steer, so the idea of buying a few pounds at a time never really crossed my mind.

It's gonna cost more per piece though. Only makes sense. Volume purchasing versus retail.

Maybe.

But if it's directly from producer to consumer, you eliminate distributor costs, transportation, etc.

Curious to see how this plays out after the dust settles.
