It is very easy to single out Minnesota for this due to the politics of the people elected and the recent fraud headlines. However, I wonder how much of this is an issue nationwide. It may not be 1/3 of all applications, but I bet it is pretty significant due the low threshold for getting a government student loan.

It's actually not huge at universities because most don't have open admission.

The ghost students are mostly targeting 2-year schools with no admission requirements. It's much harder to pull off at a university with admission requirements.

Minnesota is completely corrupt, this incident notwithstanding.

I read the WSJ article about this this morning. I think this is just the beginning of the market correction in higher Ed. We will see quite a few big name schools doing the same thing, including A&M.

We just dropped our daughter to start at Michigan State. I could not believe how much "free stuff" there was. Unlike A&M their billing is not as transparent and lacks a lot of transparency. A lot of these large state universities are probably on for a reckoning.

Yep. The massive administrative bloat and all of the left wing DEI crap that has a negative ROI (and is thankfully the first things being cut at some schools including A&M) is now coming home to roost. Some sports stuff here that was unnecessary as well.
