it was sarcasm…there are not many consistent standards right now. The one criteria seems to be "was it cool?" Yes, "okay, no rule has been broken." There are many stupid military regulations and Pete has done a good job of getting rid of some silly stuff, but leave the aviation stuff to the guys that understand it. You got it. Just as you and i do driving our cars around, an operator must have inherent ability to judge where danger lies and where it doesn't. Otherwise we're all just robots and only as good as the rules allow us to be.

That flight broke at least 2 DoD & FAA rules intentionally. If we did something remotely like that, we'd have been instantly suspended pending a safety review, legal review, and the dreaded FNAEB to see if you ever get to fly again.
The military (DoD & each branch of the service) takes aviation safety very seriously and makes set rules to uphold those safely margins. Aviators DO NOT get to violate rules and say, "well, it was just a few seconds and completely safe."
And if the Sec Def did get involved in this safety review after the pilots were suspended it's an indefensibly bad look. Period. You don't make exceptions to safety rules because it was for a supporter of the administration. Simply stupid.

I attended a small community event as a kid in probably 1982. Army Cobras landed outside our community center and set up as a static display for the day. Late that afternoon when it was time for them to head back to post, they got in, fired up, and flew out. My brother and I, both under 15, were standing less than 25 feet away. There were no ground guides or even event workers keeping people back. We got pelted with gravel, but we thought it was awesome!
And I'll never get that close to an Army helicopter that I'm not inside of again.
