X is on fire right now with Europeans arguing over Air Conditioning. In France apparently wanting AC makes you a right wing extremist. In the UK there are talking heads on TV saying they don't oppose AC but only when you can ensure 100% that it is powered by green renewable energy. They make the claim that in some areas energy is 100% green and renewable.

That has to be a leftist fantasy right? I don't think there is any way you can provide enough power from solar and wind to be 100% renewable and that you would never be able to power an HVAC unit with renewable energy.

I understand their issue with infrastructure and that buildings constructed 150 years ago aren't set up for central AC and it would take considerable expense but they are forcing people to remove window units from their homes because they violate the Cooling Heirarchy ordinances.

If it's a case where a sizable chunk of Europe is going to have to go from not having AC to having AC over the course of a decade or so, that is something that probably needs to be carefully planned for to the extent that it's possible.

Solar in a country that only has about 150 days a year or less with any sunshine. It is usually cloudy and misty.

How much sense does that make?

Further, the UK just flat out doesn't have the land space available to have large wind turbine installations.

There have been far more deaths in Europe from heat waves than have ever been killed by guns here, including suicides.

Madness and just complete stuidity.

There are places in the US that do not have AC. I lived in a really nice house in Northeast PA with no AC. A couple of weeks in the summer I was cussing the idiots (I say that with love, some good folks up there). But overall, not needed.

All that to say, unless you live on the Gulf Coast of TX, LA, AL, GA, or FL you have no business commenting on this subject.

Here's the problem with what we think of as window units. They have casement windows not double hung. Those casement windows either crank out or crank in. So window units don't work.

Neither do window screens. They don't have those either.

If they do manage to get AC's on any great scale, they may want to start planning and budgeting for evaporator coil replacements at 3 years in.

In general they are lemmings that buy into what their collectivist masters tell them to buy into imo. Pockets of people that can think for themselves get beaten down verbally over time. Same as here except we have historically had more freedom of thought and expression but the collectivists are working as hard as they can to address that "problem".

Mold in AC systems and building systems is a real thing. But it's not a huge problem.

Try that in Phoenix when it is over 100 degrees the moment the sun comes up. Of course because it is a dry heat, they use evaporative cooling, swamp coolers. Had those when I lived in New Mexico.

They install a lot of split systems which are good options for them but apparently jealous neighbors spotting the condenser units are ratting them out to the local authorities.

my second wife was from Michigan. Family lived on Lake Huron.
We wer up there one August and it got to 84.
Her brother said the heat was terrible and I was probably used to it.
I told him I wouldn't know, we all had air conditioning.

While I knew this first hand from living in England for 5 years as a kid, I recently was back there for 2 weeks.

I saw the sun for exactly 2 seconds while I was there.

They also have an aversion to clothes dryers too and prefer to hang their laundry out to dry. I remember seeing clothes lines in older houses back in the 70s but haven't seen one in decades. Even the poors in America have a dryer.

Space. No place to put a dryer. Washers are under the counter in the kitchen. Some of those units are both washer and dryer within the same undercounter unit. Laundry day must take an eternity.
