Agree on that film. I enjoyed it. I have zero issues with girl power movies if they are good. Another girl power film that Anna Taylor from Furiousa was in is that chess film. Great movie.

I actually thought the Supergirl previews were pretty intriguing and better than the Superman previews. Was never going to watch it in theaters, but would definitely rent it.

The only thing this movie has going for it is that it's based off a pretty good Supergirl comic limited series, Woman of Tomorrow. It's actually pretty dark for a Supergirl comic, she's constantly getting the **** kicked out of her and relies on the help of others to eventually come back and save the day. Also Lobo is nowhere in the comic, so I figured he's just a fan service character shoehorned into the story.

If they keep close to the comic it could be a good movie, but I figure Gunn is going to put a ton of his own spin on things and it'll be mediocre.

Which is kind of funny considering who wrote the novel this movie is based on and participated in the creation of the movie. I'm not sure how much a lot of the people who worked on this movie would like Tom King.

No doubt Lobo is fan service. Very well liked anti-hero character and cast perfectly. He's main reason I want to see this assuming he's in it for more than a cameo.

But, yes, if recent history holds up I don't have much hope for this film. I think Gunn is sniffing his own farts at this point.

Pretty accurate description.

After living there for 12 years, my belief is that it's because the nucleus of the country is the dregs of British society. The Aussie elites didn't come over on the First Fleet. Trust me. My daughters went to swanky private girls school with the elites of that country.

The women in South Australia (Adelaide) are much prettier because they are the descendants of "Free Settlers" from places like Germany.

I didn't know this actress and just looked her up to find out that she was born and raised in Sydney's "Inner West".

Also, she went to Public School which is uncommon in Sydney. Most people are going to do it rough to send their kids to Private School or at least to Catholic School (which is the best value going). Her school was some sort of state level magnet type school for the performing arts so I guess she and her parents were All-In on making it in show business. I had some future child star parent friends in LA like that who were fully committed to making their kid a star.

One reason Aussies are so successful in Hollywood is that they don't follow the same rules that most Americans follow and they will take work that Americans won't take. They're not limited by our outlook on failure.

It's hard to explain but if this is the only movie this chick ever does, she'll still be a legend back home and that will be good enough for her. Not all Aussie chicks are the next Nicole Kidman or Margot Robbie.

We need to go back to the good old days of 70's exploitation films with full frontal nudity. That's how you draw in comic-book boy incels.

The DC character, Supergirl, appeared in 1959. Kind of predates the whole hand flapping hysteria over DEI and "woke."

Milly Alcock gave an interview claiming she's been the target of criticism for "simply existing as a woman" in a superhero movie.

What an ignorant, silly little girl.

40 years ago next month, boys, young men, dads, and even - gasp - Christians, cheered for Ellen Ripley, who "simply existed as a woman" whilst outlasting the Colonial Marines.

We've worn out the superhero genre and nobody cared about Supergirl to begin with.

Make a good movie. Know your history.

And just shut the hell up.

Supergirl has been around for a while and the trailer isn't bad. Hopefully Gunn didn't force in stupid girl power tropes, evil men stuff crap. My 12- and 10-year-old will probably like it.

Sadly, the actor had to step in it like an idiot and make me think twice now about taking then to see it. No one cares lady.

Supergirl has been around for a long time. Her first movie in 1984 was hot garbage, but that was more due to the story and effects than anything the actress portraying the character said. I saw a version of the character in the recent The Flash movie - wasn't impressed, but then again, that movie sucked. I enjoyed last summer's Superman movie, but have noticed that I've had absolutely no desire to rewatch it - while I will rewatch 1978's Superman: The Movie or 2013's Man of Steel any time I feel a need to watch Superman.

I was on the fence about seeing Supergirl this summer. The trailer doesn't look great - it looks like outtakes from some bad Guardians of the Galaxy footage with Supergirl thrown in. But as a life-long fan of the Kryptonian characters (mostly Superman), Supergirl is a movie that I'd ordinarily see. This actress is about as off-putting as that chick who helped to sink Snow White, though.

This was the summer of 2024 at the absolute height of DEI madness and girl boss/girl power. Boys/men, in general, were simply fatigued by it. They passed. The summer before was even worse. I think The Marvels was the biggest box office loss in history. Again, superhero girl boss movie.

Yep, replaced John Carter as the biggest in history, not adjusting for inflation.
"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." - Sir Winston Churchill

Interesting. I didn't think John Carter was all that bad. Wasn't great but I was mostly entertained.

Agreed. I've read a couple John Carter novels and similarly, they aren't the greatest ever but good fun, like the movie.

Sure, but I don't think that changes my point. Hollywood is disingenuous with their unrealistic portrayal of women. Remember all the uproar from feminists about Barbie dolls and skinny models giving unhealthy portrayals of idealistic women? Seems to me this is the same just in a different direction.

The occasional superhero girl or over-the-top portrayal is fine, but we are swamped with this garbage now. If I have to see one more preview of M.I.A.....

While I agree with your point, I don't think it necessarily applies here. Supergirl has been a thing for decades. It's actually one of the very few legitimate girl power examples because it's from a comic book which is about the only way it would happen. It's just coming out in an environment that has long since been flooded with unrealistic examples of girl power with backdrop of reality.

IOW, if this came out in a vacuum without the surrounding toxic left wing politics then no one would care.

I agree. It might be unfair of me to pick on Supergirl, because at least it is a well-established character and the superhero movie machine is looking for any content they can push after all the biggest heroes have been done to death by now. Maybe I'm just reacting to my deep fatigue of formulaic girl power movies and TV Hollywood is churning out.

And don't think I'm against these types of powerful women characters. Sigourney Weaver in Alien was pretty groundbreaking and still stands today as one of the best women leads in an action/horror movie.

All that being said, I hate the Supergirl trailer. It looks like more overproduced slop.

ETA: Similarly Wonder Woman is a well-established character, and I liked the first one a lot. Gal Gadot being smoking hot didn't hurt either.

Posing for Calvin Klein - yeah, she's not in touch with lives of the average person.

And as mentioned by Urban - looks like she is in middle school and I can only imagine the moronic ideas and distorted world view that has filled the empty head space of a privileged juvenile (debuted on TV at the age of 14) with neither the experience or wisdom of the average person. She will go the direction of hypocrite Billie Eilish and all the other ignorant up and comers with an overinflated sense of self-worth and without a modicum of insight.

They don't like my movie because I'm a girl.

Oh, for ****s sake. Shut up already. We don't like the girl movie you're in or your entitled, narcissistic attitude.
