Yep
I heard a lot of those songs in the '80s. As someone who grew up in a strict Christian household, it took me by surprise, To say the least.

That raunchy music came out in the late-1970s. Those of us who had already been listening to Richard Pryor comedy albums were not shocked by what David Allen Coe came out with. The only thing that made it different was that a white guy was singing it instead of a black guy doing it as a comedy routine

Coincidentally, yesterday was Willie Nelson's 93rd birthday.

He was the first person to release "Tennessee Whiskey"
34 years before Chris Stapleton.

To say he was only known for one song is sad. You don't know what you missed.

Willie, Waylon, and Me are one of my favorites. One of my stations on Pandora is David Allen Coe radio because I absolutely love the Outlaw Country music era. So much better than today's garbage.

Its a shame that you have to find stuff not played on the radio to find good music.

In the 80s they would play those at Bonfire stack. Don't remember much about them except the song "I want to Fxxx the Sxxx out of you"

90s too. 93 at least.

Is it just my faded memory, or did they not play "You Never Even Called Me by My Name" at the end of every Thursday night at the Hall of Shame?

Not at the end during my era.

Around the time of Napster there were several highly racist songs that were attributed to him, but were not actually him at all. I'm curious which songs you were thinking were his.

People confuse him with Johnny Rebel. An actual racist song writer.

There was an "underground" or "bootleg' album that was produced outside the normal record companies. It was advertised in the back of sketchy magazines in the 1970s. A lot of pretty offensive lyrics that were popular with people like bikers and white supremacists.

Coe always claimed the album was satire. I am sure everyone who has listened to it has their own take on it. Raunchy is the first word that came to my mind.

Indeed. Whether raunchy or rac*st or any other label that people want put on them, I don't see how anyone can listen to the underground stuff and think that he was serious when he recorded them. The lyrics are ridiculous.
RIDICULOUS.

If anyone routinely gets their feelings hurt, go listen to some old Andrew Dice Clay standup if your sensitive ears need a warmup.

No one ever seems to pose the question, "Why would someone who's "such" a big rac*st, sing a self-deprecating song about how his woman is…?" Well, you'll get the point if you listen to the song.

And then the raunchy/sixxually explicit songs: except, nothing worse there than vintage ADC or Eddie Murphy standup.

"Jimmy Buffett Doesn't Live In Key West Anymore" is one of my favorite DAC songs. Probably wasn't offensive to anyone (except maybe Jimmy Buffett).

When you factor in the Shel Silverstein connection, it's pretty clear that DAC set out on a mission to go big on shock value.

You are going to see a lot of people excited to see the Michael movie condemn him for his racist songs, failing to see the irony.

Buffett tried to claim that DAC recorded Divers do it Deeper because he was trying to copy him. So DAC retaliated.

He wrote "Would you lay with me" and Tanya Tucker recorded it. His version of it is great.

Would you lay with me
In a field of stone?
If my needs were strong
Would you lay with me?

I grew up with DAC, Mel Street, Gary Stewart, and all the others blaring through the house on Saturday mornings from whatever LP my mom decided to spin with the front and back doors open for a breeze. All those guys are gone with the exception of Willie. Getting old sucks.

There was a claim that "Would you Lay with Me (in a field of stone)" was a ripoff of Townes Van Zandt's "If I Needed You". I can see some similarities, but they are still different songs. No one ever did anything about, and both of them are dead now.

His "greatest hits" aren't even his best songs. At one point he was a total bad ass and the best country artist going.

Mid 70s albums The Mysterious Rhinestone Cowboy, Once upon a Rhyme, and Longhaired Redneck are all absolutely solid gold and still hold up. Some of the best country music ever recorded.

Not condoning either use but David Alan Cole penned six songs using the word n***er in them.

According to Perplexity AI there are 16,348 rap songs using the very same word.

If you include the ni**a word the number triples

The contrast is pretty startling

A Coe concert in New Orleans was one of the closest brushes with death I ever came. Lady friend and I went to her brothers wedding in Florida. Coming back, stopped in New Orleans to wander Bourbon street and such. Had a couple too many Hurricanes. Heading back to the hotel, heard on the radio that DAC was going to be at such and such bar, So naturally we said oh yeah. Enjoying the show, when some old hide decided to take exception to a silly cap she bought earlier. Grabbed it and gave it a fling. So I get up to go retrieve it, wouldn't you know, landed right in the midst of a bunch of the meanest looking bikers I ever saw. But of course, with the hurricanes as additional courage, I wander right into the middle, Hey, anyone see a cap come flying in here? They pretty well ignore me, till one stands up, built kinda like the old wrestler Kong, tells me I should probably remove myself from their presence before he cuts my throat. Suddenly, my hurricanes deserted me. Told him no problem, just trying to keep the lady happy. turned to go and someone handed me the stupid cap. Got gone while I could. No one ever told me that bikers were serious about David Allen Coe.
