WSJ says Hollywood is the new Detroit
  • Since 2021, days of production in Hollywood have dropped by half (~39K - ~ 18K).
  • Hours worked by entertainment unions are down about 1/3.
  • Streaming companies(Netflix, Amazon...) have cut orders substantially.
  • Younger viewers are spending their time on YouTube, Instagram, TikTok.
  • Production costs are unsustainable in LA, meaning more production is located out of California, or increasingly replaced with AI.
Ultra high costs from being in California, a increasingly crappy product with unsympathetic spokespeople and their alienating political positions.

Everyone has seen the reel of film breaking, getting stuck in the projector, and then the fire starts. Now its playing out in real life. Let it burn.

Short scroll and go attention spans and content like feeder pellets to trained rats.

Our technology in some ways is breaking down our society in many ways, slowly but surely, and the feature length content cred has not helped themselves by only targeting political niche audiences more and more as they virtue signal through all of their work.

The woke agenda has been Hollywood's downfall. I think this is a big reason why Taylor Sheridan has been so successful. He has avoided that for the most part but, it inevitably will creep in and that will be his downfall as well.

It's more than that. Cost of business in California is craptastic. It's just cheaper to make movies elsewhere and not deal with the burdens brought on by the leftist's utopia.

I think it was Rob Lowe talking a while back about a game show he was hosting. They produced it in Ireland. It was cheaper to fly and house contestants and crew to Dublin than to produce in L.A.

I think their wokeness is an impact but I also think this board assigns too much weight as a reason. It's one of many reasons including the ones listed in the OP.

Hollywood is not the center of the film universe like it once was. There are now multiple geographical film hubs in the US. India and China have huge film sectors now.

Hollywood (California) is expensive as hell so it's facing the same financial headwinds every other business in that state is facing. And now you throw in AI and they are facing an existential crisis from that maybe more than any other sector in the country.

Atlanta is a major movie making hub right now. Much more studio friendly.

Last movie I "saw" was "One Battle After Another", on multiple flights via other's seat back screens or IPad....
The film is "highly awarded" with a "star studded cast".

Nothing stood out about the plot.
The writing was terrible.
Dialog was poor.

If I had somehow ended in the theater, I would have walked out.

Hollywood has run out of ideas and creativity.

FWIW, my wife and I see perhaps 2-3 movies per year in theaters. We saw Hail Mary Tuesday, perhaps a little predictable but a good flick, nonetheless. imo

I feel bad for anyone losing their jobs.

That being said, I think this country would be better off in a lot of ways if we just rip the bandaid off and Hollywood indoctrination ended over night.

They are the walking dead and don't know it. AI movies haven't really affected them yet but they are coming and at some point viral / citizen created AI feature length films will undercut them as well.

Taylor S. is building his own studios in North Ft. Worth and is actively filming multiple shows around the city. The studios will be a huge modern facility and Multi Million Dollars is being invested. I bet other film makers will soon be working out of that facility too.

I liked Yellowstone and season 1 of Landman, but tried to watch Marshall's and couldn't make it more than 20 minutes.

I got about halfway through Landman season 2 before bailing. It got too cheesy for me and I couldn't stand the wife and daughter characters

I guess I have Sheridan fatigue.

At this point, there are only about 2-4 movies a year i even care about watching, anymore. It's sad because I grew up loving movies and always watching the academy awards.

Fortunately, we still get a new movie from directors like Nolan and Villeneuve, where I dont feel any woke agenda, every couple years.

It's sad that the only hero movie I'm excited for is The Batman Part II, due to marvel completely giving in to woke bull*****

All I know is that the Hollywood Elite never miss an opportunity to bemoan the rich paying their fair share but have no problem moving their projects out of California to save a nickel.

That was a shockingly boring movie. I started it and about halfway through I realized I was never going to like or care about any of the characters. It is hard to watch a movie where there are no redeeming qualities in a single character. The plot was just impossible for me to engage with. I could not believe it got best picture.

I do think we're starting to see Hollywood (very) slowly turning the corner. Actors like ryan gosling are openly acknowledging that it's not their job to preach to the audience and it's not the audience's job to adapt to Hollywood. Rather, it's hollywood's job to simply entertain the audience and give the audience what they want. And I think Hollywood is (very) slowly waking up and acknowledging the fact that the audience doesn't want politics in every single product and in fact is turned off by it.

And yes, youtube creators are now showing that they can pull audiences away from the big studios, and the big egos in hollywood are starting to realize that.

I personally love great tv and great movies and i'm not relishing the idea of hollywood and theaters going the way of the dodo bird. I guess i'm just not that old and crotchy yet. So I really would like to see Hollywood see the folly of its ways and turn things around.

I have no doubt that that venture will be successful. His success with Yellowstone, as an example, was about giving the audience what they crave. A good story without injecting any sort of woke virtue signaling. It was refreshing to me and I assume many others.

I think it's inevitable that he will be pressured to experiment with more liberally progressive content in his own offerings and he will lose his audience as a result.

Still, his studio venture will likely be wildly successful.

I only see movies now on airplanes. I watched The World's End on the way to Vegas in Feb. It's a little old, like 2013 I think, but I had never heard of it. Laughed my azz off. But I can't remember the last time I went to a movie theater. Probably 2003-ish

Certain people will always demand quality human products. The rest of the mindless sheep will gladly eat the slop if it gives them what they want. AI just needs to find that perfect balance for entertainment like fast food found of salt and "fat".

When I first started working "On the Lot" in 2004, I really wanted one of the "got work?" stickers with a / no Canada Maple Leaf on it.

I never managed to get one but the cheapness was already in effect 20+ years ago.

Today, it's all self-inflicted.

I still crack up at all the circle jerk applause I saw when I watched Fahrenheit 911 in the theater in Sherman Oaks back before the 2004 re-election of W.

Yep- after Trumps first term where he took on the entire woke media and the entertainment industry people started paying more attention what Hollywood was putting out, all the woke stuff in their movies and shows didn't sit well with people once they actually realized what Hollywood was doing. The narrative changed and now Hollywood seems to be disappearing- good !

I don't want Hollywood to go away, but as a lifelong movie goer, it's hard for me to overlook the fact that I no longer go to the theater as much as I used to. I used to be able to see 20-30 movies in any given year when I was younger, but now, I go only for the big "experience" movies. This year I'll likely see The Mandalorian and Grogu, The Odyssey, Dune Part 3, Avengers Doomsday, and probably Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Supergirl. Of those, I'm really only excited about Dune Part 3 and The Odyssey - the others are simply continuations of franchises that I have long been seeing. I'm not even sure I'll be seeing Spider-Man or Supergirl in the theater.

But movies have become much more politicized - at the expense of telling good stories.

Hopefully they will be able to make a new series about America's Founders before they die, only they need to be black and gay with a lesbian and a trans or two mixed in. They can have a few token white males as villains though. I mean that seems to be the formula that is working so well for Hollywood.
