Working to get another bailout. Mail down by half, losing billions. Suggests raising first class stamp to around $1.

My suggestions:
1) Get the subsidized spam out of my mailbox.
2) Go to every other day delivery.
3) Layoff half your employees.

I suspect this would eliminate its losses; but I could also support eliminating US Postal Service altogether.

And NO - THE CONSTITUTION DOES NOT REQUIRE A US MAIL SERVICE!!!!

Maybe if my mail showed up to my house and not my neighbors .... or maybe people didn't have the master keys to the cluster boxes and kept stealing stuff (current issue in my neighborhood) I would support the USPS. At this point just privatize the mail and let's move on to the next thing.

The 7 day delivery is a sad commentary on where we are that we must receive mail on Sundays. Wonder how much that costs USPS.

As for price, USPS is almost always the cheapest at for us to send packages for our business and it was excellent until the distribution center in Houston got so messed up a few years ago.

Just sell it Bezos for a dollar and let him clean it up and merge with Amazon. Postal workers are def clocking 60+ hours a week I bet...and only delivering two or three times a week...it's ridiculous.

There is almost no need for mail delivery anymore, 99% of what I receive is subsided spam or packages that could have been shipped via FedEx/UPS. Every important piece of mail is now an email, just shut it down or take it to 2-3 days a week

Unfortunately, the spam isn't subsidized. It's a money maker for them. In fact, it's the only thing that keeps them afloat. It's presorted, so it costs them less to deliver. They break even on package, and lose money on the rest.

As a lawyer, I use mail a lot less than I used to, but there are still a lot of statutes, regulations, and even private contracts, that require notices be delivered by mail. Undoing that would be more burdensome than people realize.

I have a client that was purchased by a UK entity last year. The UK entity was genuinely surprised at how many of the US entities clients pay by check. Said they don't even have check in the UK. Of course they also don't use credit cards much either and we live on those here.

The only thing I get from USPS on a regular basis are credit card offers, Insurance company offers, and realtor postcards. Junk mail is the only thing the USPS has paying their bills so I don't ever see that crap stopping.

Nearly everything from a documentation standpoint should be electronic.

99% of documentation I get in the mail is trash.

The other 1% is paper documentation of an action I took electronically.

I've sent exactly two items certified mail with tracking and return receipt in the last 10 years or so. USPS lost both of them. In both cases, I filed a report and their customer "service" response was "items get delayed sometimes" and the report was closed as "resolved". That's bull*****

USPS is a garbage organization.

Guys, we only need to come up with roughly a 120 billion dollars to cover their pensions and retiree health benefits, if we cut it off today. I am not sure why yall are so angry that it cost us this much to get spam in the mail.

Article I, Section 8, Clause 7, of the United States Constitution, the Postal Clause

authorizes the establishment of "post offices and post roads" by the country's legislature, the Congress. As one of Congress's enumerated powers listed in the Constitution's first article, the clause has been invoked as the constitutional basis for the United States Post Office Department and its successor, the United States Postal Service.

are you claiming that "authorizes" does not mean Congress must establish the Post office?

We were having this issue in my neighborhood last year. Found out it's not really a "master key". USPS is just lazy (big surprise). ALL of the cluster boxes across the entire US have the same damn key. They straight up told us this and then refused to have the boxes in our neighborhood rekeyed to stop the theft because then our neighborhood would be a country wide outlier.

I would like to interpret that as optional. Yes. Congress can authorize it, but do we really need to?

Couldn't it be interpreted that way? Congress was given the power to establish the Post office, but if it has become antiquated, does it not have the power to shut it down?

1) Allow mail recipients (use IDs to verify) to trade spam mail for postage stamps.
2) In some neighborhoods we already have no mail Fridays and Mondays.
3) Lay off all employees and only hire back competent (no DEI) postal workers.

We try to not use US mail anymore for packages. The expensive ones have a very high failure rate at arriving. 3 in the last year.

I didn't know this (or perhaps remember.) But I'm not sure that this speaks to the real costs of delivering the spam.

Imagine the mail if it were only presorted spam. I suspect total costs would be still be humongous, as most of the labor and costs are based on the employees and infrastructure needed to actually do the "last mile" stuff.

Great add, and I am not totally discounting it. But I tend to not take it at face value.

ETA - but I can see how it adds incremental revenue.

Raise the price of presorted and junk mail to the same price as a 1at class stamp then figure out how to streamline the new system with the massive drop in mail.

Yep. Clear meaning. Are you trying to say in any other context "authorized" means "is required"?

It should be privatized, but I doubt you will get cheaper prices by doing so. FedEx and UPS are expensive and since they are private they aren't going to just be a money sinkhole in perpetuity like the USPS. All kinds of offsets here though. The entire model is frankly borderline extinct. In reality, about 95% of what is in the mail should/would be halted in a fully private model due to costs and what's left over that is legitimate mail you would likely take a price increase to move it because of the massive drop in volume.

Then it would be a matter of if and where FedEx or UPS had to set up new DC's to handle left over regional mail sort. They would likely have to go right back to the model that the USPS was doing up until last year which is using a variety of private distribution contractors for regional sort and distribution. These players and DC's already exist and have the logistical infrastructure and processes to handle it. In addition, the USPS was using commercial airlines for moving mail as well before that got ended. That entire process was a devil's bargain for the airlines though.

I don't know this for a fact, but I think some weekend delivery is now delegated to the carrier, and they are just required to do it sometime over the weekend. I've gotten some Sunday mail myself, unexpectedly.

Raise the price of political campaign mail to $5 a piece. I am in TX CD- 23 and TX-HD 122. I received a Sears catalogue worth of mailers within the past month.

4. Close rural post offices in every little community of 500 people. In my county there are five of those within a 7 mile radius, each paying a post master to sort mail every morning for 30 minutes, then sit there all day in case someone needs to buy stamps.

The USPS contracted out some Sunday delivery to Amazon. We've received mail on Sundays that way.
