It's not just Poland. Baltic countries are also wanting them.

Realistically it's not a bad idea, and gives these countries deterrence against Russia without needing to rely on us or NATO.

Obama Left them hanging to appease Russia. The US should have put nukes there at that time. Probably would have avoided all the Russia expansion over the last 20 years. Strategic location for us.

I don't see why France needs more nukes, unless the old ones are becoming unreliable. There is no European power right now that can successfully invade France. The Russians probably wouldn't have made it much past the French/German border at their peak strength in the cold war. They wouldn't make it into Germany today. The only thing they could use nukes for is to deter a Russian ballistic missile strike on Paris, but France already has that deterrent (allegedly).

Isn't Poland covered as a member of NATO and so effectively has nuclear protection now? I suppose that doesn't give them unilateral capability to use them so it's not exactly the same .

I think the idea is that even nato membership might not be sufficient.

Would you want your country's existence to depend upon NATO's resolve and its constituents' commitment to joint defense? Are you sure Germany and Britain are willing to send their native or not-so-native sons to defend your borders? Do you think Italy really wants to risk global thermonuclear Armageddon if Russia decides half your country belongs to Greater Russia?

This news comes along with the France announcement. It appears to me that some euros are accepting that the world is changing and a nation must take their defense into their own hands
