Something that I wish the segment had shown is what was the cost to run the school before the outside gig was brought in and what were the all-in costs to run it with the outside company? I know they spoke to what they were paying the company monthly but I'm betting that was just one piece of the budget line.

$375,000 a month for Hirschi Middle School alone.

That was the number for bringing in the outside vendor. Just that number alone doesn't mean much to me without the data showing the alternative. Is that less than what the district was paying traditional teaching personnel (doubtful)? If it's more than what the district would normally be paying, how much more?

I live in Wichita Falls, and I enjoy the daily Karen rants on social media with regard to this company forcing these kids to learn. If momma had spent less time *****ing on social media and more time holding her kid accountable, the school district would not have had to resort to this method.

Yep. My sister taught at Kirby for her last two years before retirement, and it was a complete zoo discipline-wise. While the video made a big deal about how much the teachers were being paid by the private entity, the real secret sauce is simply that have installed some discipline and not put up with the crap that WFISD teachers were forced to tolerate by an administration (not the current superintendent, for what it's worth) that was afraid of getting bad marks for disciplining too many of the "wrong" kids.

People talk about vouchers and competition as the way to fix schools, but, all you are really doing with that is taking some teachable kids out of the problem (and if they aren't teachable, the private schools won't put up with them for long). Until we stop letting the stragglers drag everyone else down, there will be no solution to the continuing erosion of education in this country, and that starts with discipline. Most of these kids get no discipline at home, and many of them live with "adults" who are just overgrown children themselves.

A large factor is the federal Department of Education, which, since the Obama administration, has considered a school to be racist if they discipline too many minorities. One more reason why that department should be abolished.

Wow, so you bring in a company that instills discipline and respect and academics improve? Shocker. That is reason #1 why education sucks these days in a lot places, The inmates (kids) run the prisons (school).

ETA just read the post above mine...exactly right 100000%

The fact that the union is against it tells me all I need to know. Plus capitalism - is anybody surprised that a private company that can reward performance and fire the buffoons gets better results?

Companies like that are going to be used more. They free up some of the restrictions that school districts face.

On the flip side, this can't keep happening (reposted from the Academics board):

Now see if you can find an article on college freshmen's ability to write.

I teach a 100-level communications class at the local college. I already know about that. It's bad, but they text and type enough that it isn't complete abysmal, and most can do better with a dictionary and a little effort.

They definitely can't do basic arithmetic. I taught high school math for 10 years, and we didn't use the calculator in the classroom most of the time; they could hardly do anything without a calculator. Most of them didn't know simple multiplication facts. We had to do multiplication drills in a senior math class.

Meanwhile, I could multiply three digit by three digit numbers in my head and write down the answer with little effort when I was 12. Because, they actually made us learn the concept and didn't let us use a calculator.
I know a lot about a little, and a little about a lot.
