I've been following the saga since 2020 when all of America became super racist all of a sudden following the death of St. Floyd.
There was a writer at the Washington Post named Ian Shapira who wrote several articles about how unjustly VMI had treated Blacks and women.
Shapira dug deep and found very little.
VMI has a strict honor code and one of his charges was that Black cadets are unfairly targeted for dismissal from the Institute when they are charged with honor code violations.
No different than Texas A&M, a large percentage of the Black cadets at VMI are athletes. A large percentage of the athletes don't really care for all the military business with VMI, they just want to play a sport, especially if they're on scholarship.
The simple math says that the real correlation to look for with dismissal from VMI wasn't race but, whether they were athletes or not. But never mind that. Racism was an easy sale in 2020.
And by the way, Governor Northam ("Coonman") was not only a VMI alum, he had been President of the Honor Court.
VMI winds up with the dismissal of the Superintendent (GEN Peay - who led the 101st ABN in Desert Storm) and they bring in MG Wins who still holds some of the basketball records from the 1980s.
They removed the Stonewall Jackson statue and removed his quote from "Jackson Arch" and renamed the entryway to barracks.
So, racism solved, right?
Luckily, I grabbed a few pics of the Stonewall Jackson statue when I was there in June 2020 to get my daughter's stuff from the barracks once Northam allowed the cadets back on Post after the March 2020 Covid closure.
Obviously not good enough and with the election of Youngkin, VMI had a bit of a reprieve.
But now that the Democrats are back in power, they're full on targeting VMI as a symbol.
There is a proposal in front of the VA legislature to transfer all of VMIs assets to Virginia State University (a HBCU) and to make VMI a child college of VSU.
https://www.vmialumni.org/landing/mobilize-for-vmi-speak-up-for-state-support/bill-information/It is absolutely insane.
There are people hoping that either VMI will go private, or maybe Hegseth / Trump will somehow federalize VMI and make it a Service Academy.
It's all very nuts and does nothing for the mission of the Institute.
There is even fearmongering out there about the Institute being dissolved and athletic commits not wanting to go to VMI due to the uncertain future of their athletic scholarships.
TLDR; you can't hate Democrats enough
