Supposedly the majority is large enough to amend the constitution we imposed after WW2, for example they have a chance to bring back their military.

They have a military and are expanding it. They are building next to some of our bases with their expansion. They also have very little immigration. If you have never been it's a great place to visit.

Their "military" is a self defense force that is limited in size by Article 9 of their constitution.

Which can be changed if they want and at this point should be. Japan today is not the Japan before 1945.

They could also change it so they can possess nuclear weapons.
"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." - Sir Winston Churchill

They have significant limitations imposed on their military but it's still pretty large, modern, and capable

Japan is a mess and in the middle of a death spiral since they don't have kids. Their population is very aged and you'll find 90 year olds waiting tables. It's a beautiful country and culture but for some reason that culture has turned on raising families.

More and more countries are shifting right and it's a beautiful thing. Japan going right is very good news for us. This makes it so that China knows if they mess with Taiwan that Japan is going to get involved and it means that they are going to push away from China further and closer to us. The US and Japan united are the best way to counter China in that part of the world followed closely by Korea and Australia. Japan actually has a decent navy and that's likely to get even more potent after this. They have a tremendous demographic problem like much of the world but they also have done more to plan for it than just about anyone by sending their manufacturing elsewhere and investing heavy into robotics.

My theory is that lower birth rates is a symptom of high population densities among humans. Everywhere with high population densities is seeing the same decline. Females in the workforce out earning men and birth control are confounding factors.

"Ultra conservative" means taking Japan back to the way it has been for almost the previous century.

1) The fact that the LDL won the election is not a surprise, the LDL has held power for decades.
2) The fact that the election happened at all is a big surprise. Takaichi called for early elections before even hitting one year in office.
3) The fact that the LDL won in such a landslide is a huge surprise. This is the "lower house" in the Japanese political system. The LDL now has a large enough majority in the "lower house" that they can over-rule the "upper house" in Japan. Imagine in the US if the House of Representatives could pass a law without the approval of the Senate as long as the house has a 67% majority voting on a bill. The LDL now has a 67% majority in their lower house. That is HUGE for getting things done in Japan.

In Japan, you have to hand write the name of the person you are voting for using those artsy Japanese symbols. I think that for Federal Elections in the US, it would be great if everyone had to hand write the name of the candidate on a piece of paper. Would be another level of fraud prevention if the handwriting on actual ballots were all the same.

The Japan Self-Defense Forces are not a "military". They're a "police" force who happen to own missiles and fighter jets.

Japan is on my bucket list for so many reasons - food being at the top...

That said, Japan's right wing brought you WWII and the 'Japan that can say No" movement in the 80's...They aren't fans of anyone who is not genetically Japanese.

It's a start, but they're still in a literal death spiral. Japan's fertility crisis comes down to high costs, a work culture that requires long hours and leaves parents little time for kids, and undervalued family life. They need to support families with tax breaks and more affordable housing.

They might not want you living there, but they are extremely nice and accommodating towards tourists, as long as you're respectful and not a jackass. I never once felt unwelcome visiting or like people didn't want me around.

Agree completely with this response. I'll add that Japanese in general, regardless of political leanings, have the same attitude toward non-Japanese.
