Mike Eruzione, the goaltender and MVP of the USA upset over the Soviets, and also a Gold Medal Winner, puts the woke leftists in their place.

I wish Neal Broten and rest of team would speak up too. It's important.

EDIT: Eruzione was not the goalie but rather a forward that scored in that game.

He's right you know.

Or maybe if that's the way he feels be smart enough to keep his opinions to himself and keep his mouth shut. Like it or not, wearing the flag means you're representing your country.

Jim Craig was the goalie. You are right.

He scored an iconic goal in the game.

My bad. I'm a hockey fan and should have known better

Good for him. By the way, you guys should watch Miracle: The boys of '80.
It's on Netflix and it's really good. New documentary about the 1980 hockey team. Old footage new interviews really cool.

His house may have been torched by the left so he thought better of making his feelings public.

Athletes that make that kind of statement should be immediately removed from the team and not be considered in the future

100%

Dismiss them from the team, pull them from the games and they can find their own way home.

Netflix came out with a new documentary on the 80 hockey team. They interview a number of the players, get into the politics of the time and how that game against Russia united this country and helped Americans to be proud of their country again after the issues of the 60s and 70s.

For those of us that watched it "live" on tape delay in 1980, it is a great stroll down memory lane. For those that didn't see it, I can't recommend it enough. It is the best thing I have watched on that team and the events around them.

The USA, USA, USA chant didn't start with them but it became popular with the team and especially in the game against the Ruskies. You heard it all over the country throughout the next decade or so.

I saw it while scrolling on Netflix, but intend to watch it tonight with my family to celebrate the opening ceremony!

There's a handful of servicemen competing. Imagine having to be on the same team with these entitled, self absorbed fools.

I still remember watching in the 70s and 80s and anytime you see that red CCCP you got kind of creepy chills. They just felt like such bad evil people. I know they really weren't, but they were such tough athletes.

In many ways, that game changed the world. Our kids beat them at their pros' best game, which was tilted in their favor at the time. And they infused the Americans with a sense of belief that we could be great again (sound familiar). Reagan ran with it and trounced Carter. By the time he was done, the USSR was in life support, as was the communist bloc. Amazing what happens when we have a leader that believes in our excellence and being deserving of it.

Of miracles and men: espn. Was well done also from the Russian side. Showed the one skater trying to get the Russians to play for the NHL and finally broke through that barrier.

In the USSR the top hockey teams in their domestic league - where the national team players played when they weren't on international duty - were not "technically" pro teams, preserving their amateur status.

Instead, they were "club" teams run by institutions like the KGB, the army, government factories, and soviets.

The team CSKA Moscow, where most of their top players were stashed by the government, literally translates to "Central House of the Red Army," and was part of the army, hence the club's nickname "Red Army."

The players on that team were officially soldiers in the "Red Army," actually did reserve duty, and were heavily "watched" by the KGB.

More than half of their 1980 Olympic team were players from CSKA Moscow, including stars...

Slava Fetisov
Alexei Kasatonov
Sergei Starikov
Boris Mikhailov
Sergei Makarov
... and goalie Vladislav Tretiak

Excellent. Thanks. This is exactly why I TexAgs. Know stuff.

At 9y/o, I just figured every Soviet was in the Army and they had a team of all stars.

Turns out, I wasn't that far off...
