Sorry if this has already been asked and answered, but can't you just have all teachers take roll the period of the walkout and discipline the unexcused absentees later?

Yes, they can take roll. But it's considered an unexcused absence just like any other. You can't discipline based on "why" they are absent. Once they leave campus / school property, they can do whatever is legal locally, nationally etc. Those absences have to accumulate until they hit whatever trigger for discipline exists in policy etc.

It's literally illegal to use grades as a punishment. Mark them absent, it's an unexcused absence, and they get zeroes for any work done in class that day. As a teacher, that's about all they can do.

Ha! My son came in today and said some kids from his HS walked out, mostly freshmen. He said the campus police and regular police were waiting on them outside the door. They promptly turned around and walked back to class.

His comment, "Dumbasses."

Teachers should announce that they could give a pop quiz any day. It will be 11% of your grade.

Any time during they year they do this, POP QUIZ day.

Education really is one of the fields that everyone has an opinion on, but they have absolutely no idea of reality.

The ideas in this thread range from impractical to illegal.

There have been some sane educator responses in here that have patiently explained why you cannot do most of the punishments people think you should do.

The most horrific response in this here: "IMO one of the easiest ways to stop this type of crap is for the school district to threaten to release all the names/family members of the students caught skipping to ICE. I guarantee that would limit and at least scare many of these kids to protest knowing their family members could get shipped back."

It definitely encapsulates the thinking of "the cruelty is the point".

Well a 12 year old got lost yesterday from Simon Middle School in Kyle when he attended a school walkout. Ended walking 5 miles to Lehman High school in tears fearing he couldn't get home. Lehman teachers got in touch with his family and got home. This week because of these walkout Hays School District has has 2 girls arrested for assaulting officers. Multiple kids fighting downtown Jyle with alchohol. The confrontation in Buda with the man and the kids, a kid sideswiped accidentally by a vehicle and now this. Luckily no one seriously hurt.

Big behaviors are easy. Vapes, weapons, etc. General behavior issues? A different animal. You used to get ticketed for cussing a teacher, not any more. Underage kids with tobacco used to get tickets. I don't disagree with anything you wrote here, but it contradicts what you said earlier: schools CAN and DO suspend/send kids to AltSch. It may not be enough, but that's a different argument entirely. As I said, the districts my wife works in have schools that most definitely ARE out of control and things like you said happen there daily. BUT THAT DOESN'T MEAN that schools have no power to do things and/or aren't doing ANYTHING.

What you're saying is a little like saying a community that doesn't enforce traffic laws or petty crimes but does enforce serious felonies doesn't need a police force because there is no one to arrest. No, they SHOULD enforce the other ones but not doing well enough in one area doesn't mean there aren't areas where criminal enforcement isn't getting done. The schools can shut down these so-called protests tomorrow if they want. Kids leave, automatic suspension. Those that don't care, fine. Either the school doesn't want to do that because they like the kids protesting or they don't want to suspend anyone because of the loss of daily attendance money.

But don't say they are helpless. They aren't.

Any kid involved in extracurriculars can be barred from participation in these activities for unexcused absences…

Take away their ability to participate in those…
