It's a potential current event, and we all know it will become political if it verifies.

Heads up TX! Confidence is increasing in the potential for a significant intrusion of Arctic air and wintry precipitation toward the end of the week. Monitor the forecast closely and start thinking about how you can Protect the 4 P's: People, Pets, Pipes, and Plants. #txwx #dfwwx

Texas takes it very hard from the 12z update of the flagship European model.

Brutal cold, an ice storm, what else?

Temperatures this next weekend just updated 20F colder than last model update 12 hours ago.

Saturday has a legitimate chance to be one of the coldest January days of the last 25 years

Believe it if/when it happens.

My personal bet is the larger impacts will be to the east of TX. I expect we will get cold here in DFW.

I do think it will be a major storm for the US & will create some short-term havoc.

NWS Fort Worth put some thoughts in the long-term forecast section in this discussion. I've found them to be a rational office as a whole.

At this time, the best case scenario would be for a slightly slower Arctic air arrival with subfreezing temps holding off until Friday evening/night, allowing school/work commutes to conclude before impacts to travel can commence. A worse (and still quite plausible) scenario would be for the subfreezing air to arrive earlier in the day Friday which would necessitate early dismissals or result in a deterioration of travel conditions
during a Friday evening commute in parts of North Texas. As mentioned previously, this will be the main forecast issue the next couple of days, and may not have more clarity until within range of the NAM and other high-res guidance as we get into the midweek period. Sufficient evidence exists among guidance at this time range to conclude that this will be our first legitimate shot at winter weather impacts in North/Central Texas so far this season.

Frigid weather like this always happens when both of my ex-wives are in the same place at the same time. I can verify this forecast as 100% accurate!

Predicting 31 degrees on the coast next Saturday. That means I'll lose landscape. Again.

This would be the third out of last five years that we got freezing temps that kill everything.

I was told there would be Global Warming and that by doubling down living this far south I would rarely have to deal with freezing weather destroying my landscape.

I got a cheap (<$100) greenhouse from harbor freight and put a small space heater on a 12 AWG extension cord in it for some of my more sensitive potted plants that don't fit inside very well anymore. Thermostat keeps it around 55-60. You could probably do similar with some thick plastic sheeting and infrared bulbs or small ceramic heaters on an extension cord. You can get plugs with a built on thermostat to kick on and off at specific temps. Typically made for well houses, but would work for this too.

On the bay, man. We are Zone 9 - Garden Region IV. It's all subtropical to tropical plants down here.

Personally, I've started slowly replacing our full tropical stuff with more winter hardy plants as stuff gets killed. Changes the look of the place but replacing landscape every year is expensive.

Where is that? Corpus Christi?

It's probably a good idea that you replace the tropicals, because it's not a tropical climate.

This is a terrific time to remind everyone that the Texas power grid is the most reliable in the Americas, and the only North American grid to never experience an uncontrolled blackout.

Quote:

The Texas A&M University System and Last Energy have launched a bold collaboration to bring next-generation nuclear power to life with a microreactor pilot at the Texas A&M-RELLIS campus. This groundbreaking project will deploy Last Energy's 5-megawatt PWR-5 microreactor a compact version of its larger commercial design to demonstrate safe, low-power criticality and, in future phases, electricity generation for the grid. Fully financed with private capital and backed by a fast-tracked pathway with the U.S. Department of Energy, this initiative marks Last Energy's first U.S. reactor deployment and positions Texas at the forefront of advanced energy innovation.

More than a technological milestone, this partnership represents a powerful fusion of private innovation and public research working together to solve real-world energy challenges. With fuel secured, land leased at RELLIS, and federal authorization underway, the pilot sets the stage for scalable, reliable, and clean power solutions that support Texas' economic growth and energy independence. Texas A&M's mission to fuel innovation and shape the future of energy is on full display with this microreactor project ushering in a new era of reliable, next-generation power.

Cut off Low over SoCal and Baja plowing into air this cold is gonna make for a huge mess if this model pans out. FYI the NWS nailed both the 1983 and the 2021 event a week out. People need to watch this thing.

I'm kind of a weather nerd. Will be interesting to see how the forecast changes over the next few days. This latest update makes me feel a bit better about Texas but that may change in the next few hours. Then it will change again tomorrow. Then again the next day.

Am I mostly correct in assuming we should have the forecast pretty well locked down by around Wednesday?

High today in NW Wisconsin was -5 with windchill around -25. Tomorrow is going to be colder. I now have no excuse to not do all that crap I've been putting off inside
