That's scary as hell. T&P for their families.

Show your high school age kids these stories. I hate to do it but I'm a psycho about knowing your exits, especially at bars and nightclubs/restricted access buildings.

You've got a great point. Too many people of all generations are more eager to pull out their phones to record something wrong going on instead of either doing something to help the situation or remove themselves from harms way.

I wonder how many fewer lives would've been lost at this place before cell phones.

Just awful. Looks like a basement type situation. No windows in the Swiss Alps sounds like a crappy place for a bar.

We just came back from a trip to Disneyworld. Two of our favorite bars are Oga's Cantina (Hollywood Studios) and The Beak and Barrel (Magic Kingdom.) Both have one main entrance with no obvious additional exits for strict reservation control. Makes me a little cautious now.

Just be aware of your surroundings. One fire extinguisher when it first started would have saved them all

You have to wonder if the staff was drinking along with the customers. NYE and everyone partying their asses off. I doubt there were enough sober people in that bar to instantly recognize the danger and act accordingly

If the rumors of underaged kids partying is true then I'm assuming the staff was pretty lax on a lot of things.

The age to drink in Europe is like 16-18 depending on location.

Some of the missing are reportedly 14-16 years old

Like the Gulliver's nightclub fire in the 70's. A shocking news story with televised first-hand accounts...

Gulliver's nightclub fire - Wikipedia

Quote:

Down a short but fairly narrow flight of stairs was the lower level where the lounge was. In this area was a sunken dance floor. It was in this lower level where the late night discotheque took place...

... Most of the 24 victims were found at the foot of the stairs, with some others on the sunken dance floor.[5]

Based on that one narrow stairwell exit, the issue started when it was approved to open.

People also greatly underestimate how hard it can be to put out a fire. I did see a report of someone trying to put it out with a towel or something. Several years ago, I was at a friend's restaurant, someone came in and told him his dumpster was on fire. We go back there, hook up a water hose and start dumping water in the dumpster. It was a losing battle. Fortunately, a fire station was directly across the street. When the call was sent to the station, one of the fireman walked out the stations door and tells me others, "Yep, there's a fie!" It took the fireman about 20 minutes to put the fire completely out.

Once that fire started spreading, without a proper fire suppression system or fire fighting gear, the fire wasn't going to be even slowed.

Yeah, I don't understand why there wasn't a fire extinguisher, that fire was so small to begin with. That is horrific and I am just astounded at the people standing around taking pictures and videos of it with their phones.
Good Lord.

To death has to be absolutely horrific. Hopefully most of them are knocked out by the smoke first, but holy God that's awful.

Reminds me of that fire in the nightclub in New Jersey or Philly about 20 years ago.

This is similar to someone taking a selfie on the edge of a cliff and falling over. You can see the stairs right before the video ends and no one was on them.

They could have all survived if they exited single file when this fire started and there was no fire extinguisher.

Seems like the operators didn't have any kind of fire plan or fire alarm procedure, and staff wasn't trained on emergency response.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-15455451/34-Swiss-inferno-victims-died-renovated-staircase-fell-apart-tried-escape-flames-leaving-trapped-emerges.html

Some more details have emerged. One of the bar owners, the husband, is in temporary custody after appearing in court to answer for the fire. The other owner, his wife, was at the bar when it caught fire and she ran to the registers and took the cash out of the tills and made her escape and went straight home. Not a good look there.

Apparently there was a service door on the basement level that could have served as an escape route but it was locked. The stairwell was originally 3x wider but the owner reduced it 2/3 during renovations when he bought the bar and that led to about 85% of the deaths. Over 30 bodies found under the stairwell that collapsed under the weight of all of the people fleeing at the same time.

That sounds like the kinds of precautions you take when you have customers sneaking out without paying the tab. Not sure if it was an issue there, though.

Crazy what age and experience does for you. The second I saw ANY flame on that ceiling, I'm screaming get the hell out as I would have already been on the top step of the stairwell. Video is wild.

There was a bottleneck in the basement but also again on the main floor where the window walls were. People were stuck at the main dooe as well.

The husband owner is a former pimp that has served time so it wouldn't be shocking for there to be some kind of connection to organized crime

Have not but I get this feeling anytime I'm at Billy Bobs in Foet Worth. Hell, the Dixie Chicken looks like a walking grease fire.

I worked there in the early 90s and if a grease fire had started in that kitchen in the back of the bar and was allowed to get out of control anyone caught upstairs in Don's office would have been a goner. I am only aware of one rickety and narrow wooden stairwell from the ground floor to the office area. Don's office had a big steel door that looked like it came off an antique bank vault and there was wood paneling on all of the walls and antique guns mounted all over the place.
