My son went to a Talarico event in San Antonio yesterday. He came back saying how reasonable he sounds.....
Talarico is getting some traction with the younger crowd by saying that Republicans talk a good game, but they are actually very hard hearted when it comes to immigrants. Then, racism, totalitarianism, etc. is the result.
I appreciate this post.
I am Facebook friends with many of my former students, and as you say, quite a few of them have posted stories of going to hear Talarico speak and extolling his Christian vision vs. the evil divisiveness of the Republicans, particularly related to immigration.
It worries me.
So far, he isn't bringing over new people, just capturing the attention of the reliable democrat voters.
Talarico is the typical progressive "Christian", heading to a liberal seminary and then espousing his version of "social justice" Jesus alone with zero views on sin, atonement, and salvation.
He's a wolf in sheep's clothing, which is why he's dangerous. He's leading people astray from a right view of Jesus. His politics are just a stepping stone.
I agree with this. When my son and I revisit this conversation, one of the points I plan on bringing up is the difference between blind compassion and compassion with an expectation of personal responsibility.
The flaw in Talarico's premise is that because Republicans expect a level of personal responsiblity given by those who have entered this country illegally, he assumes Republicans are devoid of compassion. In actuality, it is the opposite. True compassion helps those who are willing to play by the rules, and who are willing to find a personal purpose in life beyond taking advantage of those who are helping them.
Immigrants who are willing to go through the proper processes of immigration, and who are willing to assimilate into American culture, are completely welcome. Those who have short-circuited the process, or who came in with zero vetting and have no intention of melting into American culture, need to go back home.
Talarico is white-washing the deeper levels of what is motivating immigration enforcement in favor of a simple good/bad argument.
