Someone sent me this link. It is an Indian newspaper.

An Indian national, who is a US Green Card Holder is serving in the US Army. I don't know how long this has been going on but this is a red flag to me. We cannot have foreigners doing these jobs.

What happens in 10 years?
US Chief of Army Staff going to H1B Rajesh Kumar, born in Koraputapur, Punjab just because "we could not find the right skills in America"?

Joining US army best shot at citizenship? Indian Green Card soldier explains
https://www.indiatoday.in/world/us-news/story/us-does-not-want-immigrants-anti-immigration-unless-they-serve-us-military-army-indians-in-america-green-card-citizenship-2813208-2025-11-04

While there's a growing anti-immigrant sentiment in the US, thousands of immigrants, including Indians, are serving in the US military. Many join the wings of the American military for stable pay, benefits, and a faster path to citizenship. The reason why America allows foreigners to be enlisted into its forces is its recruitment shortfalls.

Quote:

Thirty-eight-year-old Shilpa Chaudhary, who is originally from Delhi, is an Indian citizen. But she is currently serving with the US Army. At an age when most civilians settle into midlife routines, Chaudhary chose to become a soldier in the US. As a Green Card holder, she was eligible to enlist in the US military. Chaudhary has been posting about her experience on her YouTube channel, and her Instagram and TikTok too.

HOW US ALLOWS IMMIGRANTS IN ITS MILITARY? WHAT ARE THE PERKS?
The US Department of Defense recruits lawful permanent residents (Green Card holders) into the US military. Many Green Card holders apparently join the US Army, Navy and the Air Force, as it offers them an expedited path to citizenship.

So these people have no love for the country, they just joined because they could get a citizenship quickly.

WHY US ARMY HIRES IMMIGRANTS TO FIGHT FOR IT?
This provision of immigrants in the US military might primarily be in place because of the US military's recruitment shortfalls, The New Yorker noted in a report.
In 2022 and 2023, the US Army fell short of its recruitment target by roughly 25%, missing about 15,000 soldiers each year. It managed to meet its 2024 goal only after lowering the target by over 10,000 recruits.
The US Navy has faced similar struggles. It missed its 2023 target and met them in 2024, only after lowering entry standards, with almost half the new recruits scoring below average on aptitude tests, The New Yorker reported.

We sold out our manufacturing base and IT industry by hiring too many foreigners and lost all our expertise. Now we will do the same with our defense.

All for a few dollars.

Military service as a means to citizenship has been a thing for a long time. I worked with a bunch of US military linguists who were foreign nationals. I don't want to sound unpatriotic, but these days most US citizens who join the service aren't doing so out of patriotism. They're doing it for the benefits and almost guaranteed access to VA disability benefits for the rest of their lives.

It's been a thing for as long as I can remember and I'm pushing 20 years. My current unit has several indian and chinese nationals, many with advanced degrees in lower enlisted positions with AIT's that were easy and short. They join the reserves, go to an AIT that's like 6 weeks long, get their citizenship, serve their 6 years and get out. Some actually really like it and ascend to officer or stay in as NCO's.

I will also say that a significant amount of our reserve medical corps is made up of Indian immigrants. Dentists, physicians, specialists, etc can all join and earn significant reimbursements for the cost of their professional schools.

What makes you think this? These are green card holders, they came here legally and are pursuing citizenship the legal way. I have no problem with this.

It makes me think of the scene in 'Gangs of New York' with the Irish immigrants getting off the ship, straight to the U.S. Army recruiters to sign papers, getting their blue uniform and musket, saying "I wonder when they feed us?".

In many ways they are more patriotic than the average US citizen who joins the service.

I went to Basic Training in 1987 and had two Filipinos in my Training Flight. They were doing it to get citizenship.

Military service is probably the best way to screen people seeking citizenship.

I'm not sure what the OP is really upset about. We had foreigners fighting side by side with colonists in the revolution. Congress wrote the service to citizenship pathway into law during WWII, it isn't like this is new.

Lots of Filipinos were in the navy 40 years ago, especially in the Pacific fleet. They would retire, move back to the PI, and live a very nice lifestyle.

It's not a problem until they have their own commanders. And their own units. Looking back through history when you had four nationals fighting together as a cohesive group as a separate force in your military is when you got into trouble. When they didn't get paid or things didn't go their way, They turned to their own intrigues, which often led to the overthrow of a country or the rape and plunder of that country.

Or even worse when you relied on foreign auxiliaries to be your only fighting force, and they eventually ruled your country. Example late Roman empire, and on a tighter level, Britain, after the pull out of the legions and subsequent the hiring of Anglo-Saxon companies

It's not a new thing.

My dad did this when he came to the US in the mid-1950s. With the draft on at the time, it was hard to find a job if he hadn't already served plus it fast-tracked his citizenship process. Also, if he died while in the Army, he would have automatically become a citizen, which basically provided for a decent burial and benefits for his widow if he had been married at the time.

This has been going on forever.

My uncle joined the US army at 16 and was a Peruvian citizen. This was in 1964.

Yeah i don't understand the OP's thoughts on this. The first person from my Dad's family who came to the US from Greece was his uncle who volunteered and went to France as a doughboy. Plus there have been some men that did this and earned the Medal of Honor as who also enlisted in time of war for example Louis Cukela USMC was from Croatia and George Dilboy s Greek man from Asia Minor who served in the US Army and who was killed earning his.

This has been a thing forever. I know several citizens of Mexican descent whose ancestors have used this as a means to citizenship. Solid people.

However, along the lines of the OP, it does seem like a potential way to infiltrate not only the country but the military as well. Does anyone have confidence that these immigrants are 100% vetted out, especially in the Obama and Biden admins?

There are definitely Russians in the U.S. Army

Unless they stopped enlisting them within the last 10 years or so

I'm pretty sure foreign nationals serving in the United States Army is not a new thing

Now is it a new problem? That I don't know

There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." - Sir Winston Churchill

I found out non-U.S. citizens were in our military when I meat a fellow-Marine who was an Indonesian Dutch citizen. He complained about being assigned riot duty in the Washington, D.C. area in the late 60s and ended up on Okinawa* where I was.

* This was before Okinawa was handed back to Japan.
