Killeen airport is great. I fly out of there as much as possible and avoid AUS at all costs. The only drawback is having to make a connection, but price, parking, and efficiency make up for it.

DFW is pretty good for a large airport. It has its issues, but I always find it to be easy to get around and has lots of restaurants and the American lounges are good. I fly a lot for someone who doesn't travel for business, and I prefer DFW to any of the other large airports. SEA and LAX aren't close to as good.

I don't travel a ton but avoid dfw like the plague. I think every single flight I've taken through dfw had had delays.

I'm pretty sure I've had whiskey in Salt Lake City! Might have been beer. Either way. It works.

When I lived in Denver, I made a bunch of trips to SLC between 2000-2003.

Back then (before the Olympics anyway) I think you could only get beer at the Polygamy Porter location in the airport.

I was back there for work circa 2013 and there were a lot more options. I think they've loosened up a lot of the restrictive liquor laws out there.

When I connected through SLC in 2024, it was like a regular airport - but still had plenty of Mormon Elders shipping out to points unknown.

The other nice thing about GRK (I think this might have changed recently) is that they had all 3 major domestic airlines - United, American and Delta.

Downside of course was that if I tried to fly to GRK from Los Angeles, Delta would route me through Atlanta so I never did that.

Strange must just be bad luck/timing.

Other than storms which do happen it is pretty good. I've rarely had delays flying out of there hundreds of times. And my daughter flies back here a lot. If she has delays getting here it is always because of somewhere else (like NY which is where she flies out of). Occasionally her deprture is delayed but not often and not by much. She has been stranded in many other places (Cleveland, LA, Denver, Charlotte, Miami) by loooong delays.

Thanks for sharing that link. I found these definitions interesting

These are defined by total number of departures in the current month, as follows:
  • Major Airports: more than 12,000
  • Large Airports: 6000 - 11,999
  • Medium Airports: 2500 - 5999
  • Small Airports: 1500 - 2499
I would not have expected DEN and DFW to have almost the same number of departures.
Likewise, I would not have expected LAX and CLT to be neck and neck for the number of departures.

Interesting. That is specifically for September. Wonder if that was particularly bad for some reason.

Looking at DOT annual data DFW is middle of the pack it seems for 2023 anyway. But the difference between 1st and 18th is like 6%. and first to last is a difference of 70% vs 83%.

I think Georgia stopped doing this, but some states might still. They had a law that no alcohol could be sold or served on election day. So you are connecting through Atlanta, have had a long tough day, and are looking forward to a $15 beer during your layover.

Having traveled through several major airports in the United States over the years, it never struck me that they are objectionable necessarily. The ones I have seen have clean restrooms for the most part and a good supply of shops, restaurants, and such. I recently returned from my first trip to Europe and went through airports in Zurich, London, and Amsterdam. Then, I remembered Trump's frequent criticism about airports in the USA and his pledge to do something about them. I never really connected with him on that angle - until now. The airports I saw in Europe are heads and shoulders better than ours - by a long shot. Indeed, many of them give you a feel as though you are in a fancy hotel lobby - nice designs, low lighting, upscale restaurants and shops. There is truly a noticeable difference. Just thought I'd put that out there . . .

Let's spend taxpayer dollars for luxuries. Is that your message?

Perhaps if they took donations to do it. But forcing everyone to pay tax dollars for them?

That honestly looks better than the busses I have to take from the plane to the terminal at Frankfurt. Did the same in Rome. Quite a few large european airports still have way too many "gates" dumping you down stairs on the tarmac. That's embarrassing in 2025.

Frankfurt is the suck. It's the only airport where I've hired a sherpa to get me from gate to gate (we had a very tight connection from Marseilles and took off half an hour late. She was worth every penny). They're in the middle of e pretty big expansion and renovation, so it will be interesting to see how it turns out.

Here in Texas DAL, HOU, AUS, and CRP have been rebooted. Hell, DAL is about to get rebooted again, already.

SAT is being rebooted as well.

But can we all still agree that for one of the more major airports in the state, AUS sucks bad?

AUS is 10x better than any European airport. Namely easy to get in and out of and decent food choices.

Austin sucks ass too.

Especially if you travel early, or late.

Delayed after 10pm - best of luck to you.

Long time Austin resident here and I could not agree more that AUS is the suck. And there are NO decent food choices there. AUS is outgrowing itself quickly and its poor initial design will not make for easy or efficient expansion as best as I can tell. I also like the way the floor shakes from time to time. Comforting.....

The biggest ****up in the Austin airport was moving TSA pre-check to one centralized spot. I swear now it's sometimes faster to go through regular screening.

To add to this....
I flew BNA to SEA yesterday with a connection at DFW.
Up at 3am, boarding flight at 6am...
Land at DFW for a 10am flight.... being Sunday, the bars (even the private admirals lounge bar) cannot serve alcohol because "reasons".

Airports should be exempt from the stupid blue laws.

I was in Bangalore and they did this to me.
Luckily, in the Marriott Lounge, I was able to sneak some beers.

In the Indian state of Karnataka, the elections were not held on some predetermined date. They would just announce these snap elections and all of a sudden you couldn't get alcohol.

Bottom line is that DFW area with DFW and DAL is the best airport combo location in the country.

Smack dab in the middle of the country with flights to anywhere in the USA. You don't realize how good you have it there until you move away. We were 10 min from DAL and 20 min from DFW.

You are totally spoiled living there if you use air travel a lot.

I think this may be the most true and accurate statement I have ever read in 20+ years on TexAgs

After 54 years I moved from from Dallas to Florida. And I have thought many times, I was so spoiled with DFW/DAL and the ability to literally fly anywhere in the world non-stop, The only easy transAtlantic flight I can take now is TPA to Gatwick on American. Yuck!

Agree that DFW is no worse than any other major airport when it comes to delays. Layout is easy to negotiate, nonstop flights nearly everywhere, multiple TSA lines at each terminal is convenient, etc.

However, this all goes out the window from April-May. I do everything I can to not fly during peak storm season.

There are much worse airports than DFW but once they get to that size they can be a pain. If you have a rental car you have to plan for another hour just to get your car.

Here's some math to put it in perspective... our aiports may need a facelift, better parking solutions, and traffic patterns but they work well and that's what matters.

US Airports average over 10% more flights per available gate than their European counterparts.
Compared to China, the US has better utilization (10%+) but moves considerably less passengers.

US airports average over 10% better on time arrival/departure to both Europe and China

Here's the real kicker....

In 2024 - The US invested 1.7T in infrastructure projects
In 2024 - Europe invested ~720B in infrstructure projects
In 2024, China invested OVER SEVEN TRILLION in infrastructure projects

The US is significantly larger highway infrastructure, nearly 1 MILLION more miles than china and over 500,000 more than Europe.

Our rail network is way outdated and needs upgrading, but even as touted as that is we have the same size rail network as Europe and nearly 50% more track laid than China. Now, most are modern where ours aren't.

We need to invest heavily in updating infrastructure. We have a lot of it and it's outdated. It's going to take major investment, but it needs to be done with an eye on economic impact.

Just for kicks... more of a statement on geography than anything else but a surprising stat.

China - 1,000,000 Bridges
Europe - 800,000 Bridges
US - 625,000

Talk about horrible airports - well one of them anyway.

IAH - nowhere near Houston it's like if DFW was in Mckinney, terrible traffic getting into it, terrible routing around terminals, parking sucks, endless construction and since it's like one path through the airport you are always impacted. And exiting is even worse. And no metro rail option at all. Every terminal is different, every parking and pickup method is different. No continuity at all. And they've landlocked themselves so any growth is a major impact. The people mover train in the basement is an archaic joke that must be 40+ years old.

Hobby - I guess its kinda like Love, except if they built 5 gates a 20 minute walk from the other gates. I have no idea about traffic, parking or security since I've only connected through it. Seems ok except the random 5 gates in a different county if you have to hump it.

I agree with you about the random 5 gates that are a 20 minute walk from everything else. Peculiar.

But otherwise, Hobby is a piece of cake for anybody on the South side of Houston to Galveston.
(don't get me wrong - it's no Burbank Bob Hope Airport but... it's not bad)

I prefer to park at The Parking Spot because it's cheaper but... there have been a couple of times where I've coming screaming into Hobby, stuck my truck in the parking garage and run to the gate. Which is a lot closer than trying to get an Uber at Dallas Love Field.

The only bad experience I've had at Hobby during the past decade was when the hijab wearing TSA chick didn't like how my feet were placed on the yellow footprints in the scanner. I seriously don't think a 15 degree angle on my feet is going to allow me to hide a sharp instrument or more than 100 ml of liquid. If it does... huge security hack for terrorists.

If you think Intercontinental is out there... you'd never make it if you lived in Denver.

.wrt to the rail between terminals, yes, the clown car in the basement is hilariously outdated.
It's been that way for 50 years that I'm aware of.

These days, there is a train between terminals that is above the terminals but it's not well marked in my opinion. And if you're on United, it's easier to just walk between C-D-E.

The main thing other than construction that is screwed up at Intercontinental is the way they do the Uber pick-up. The Uber line completely blocks the parking garage entrance. Extemely poor planning.

Intercontinental has plenty of land/runways, etc. But yeah, it has grown far beyond what the original Jet Era plan was 75 years ago.

Your comment about how far out from Houston the airport is, is pretty funny considering IAH is 15 miles from downtown Houston. DFW is 15 miles from downtown Dallas and 18 miles from downtown Fort Worth. Same or arguably better.

Wasn't talking about distance from Downtown.

But from huge parts of Houstons metro population - Katy, Pearland, Sugar Land, etc. anything south and or west of downtown. Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think a lot of people live in downtown Houston. But sure for those living in Houston center or just on the north side it's not bad.

But DFW is very centrally located not just to BOTH downtowns... but Arlington, all of HEB, C/FB, Lewisville, FM, GP, Addison. Even Frisco is not bad with 121. I mean tons of DFW populations is inside the two anchors right where DFW is. And half of the population of those cities (west side of Dallas, east side of FW) is also close. Of course it sucks for Mesquite, Allen, McKinney but those are getting out there

And I am very familiar with Denver.
