In a previous life, I used to test emissions from power plants. We were awarded a contract with the World Bank and tested several power plants in Jamaica. So, I was able to travel around the country a bit.

The level of poverty is shocking. I saw some pretty horrible things there. Machete crimes through the roof and drugs everywhere. Most of them GTFO the island if they have a chance to do so.

Despite that, they're a loving and hospitable people. We need to pray for them.

if so- why are all the Caribbean islands which have the best weather in the world and millions of wealthy tourists-

We stayed at Sandals South Coast a few years ago. It looks like they may be taking a direct hit. The people were great.

It is crazy how well defines and stable that storm is. There's just nothing coming in from the west to disrupt it.

i saw videos of workers scrambling to clear out gulleys which control water drainage. years of neglect and filled with trash, debris, trees, etc. failure to maintain for years but at the last possible minute someone sends a couple desperate backhoes to try and remediate.

NOAA42 had a safety event triggered and is heading home. Had a drop that pulled almost 4 Gs. Ryan Hall showed they dropped 700ft in 5 seconds.

It's a 6 g airplane in all three directions. that being said, 4 g in the -Z direction had to be - exhilarating.

Their last drop in the south eyewall showed 198 mph at the surface.

At Alligator Pond, where land fall is projected, already heavy rain with 50 mph winds.

Those kinds of winds and if it stays fairly slow, it's going to strip the land bare. Harvey did a number on the oak trees in Rockport and he was moving at a decent clip coming in.

Looks like the very rough ride was confirmed. Plane had to leave early. They reported svr turb and a "sawtooth" eye. Looks like they moved 600-700ft up & down during this stretch in ~1 min.
