"The gap between the energy required for artificial intelligence and the global grid's capacity to generate and transmit electricity is vast and unlikely to be closed within our lifetimes," said Dave Stangis. Senior Executive at Apollo Global, a leading Private Equity firm where he led the sustainable (green) energy strategy.

..."renewable energy alone will not suffice to power the AI era. As a result, global investment and industry are shifting from the previous mindset of "energy transition" to a more urgent model of "energy expansion."

In short, he is saying that reducing CO2 is no longer a realistic consideration, because of AI demand. In 2024, AI uses ~.3% of current electricity demand. In 10 years, AI demand is expected to grow 20-30X.

What you are hearing is the end of Climate Doomsayers. Rightly or wrongly, governments and industry have decided green energy loses.

Bloomberg article - VERY paywalled. I'll put AI Summary in next post.

AI abstract - Apollo executives have warned that renewable energy alone is insufficient to power the artificial intelligence era. This has shifted the investment community's focus from "energy transition" to the more urgent "energy expansion" model, which requires a substantial increase in all sources of electricity. This creates multi-trillion-dollar investment opportunities for investors like Apollo in the infrastructure sectors of power generation, transmission, and storage.

The energy required for AI is HUUUUGE. We are all going to be paying more for it in the future. On the plus side, Texas is likely to benefit from it economically, it is a prime target for US electricity expansion.

BTW, I think I've found some money to get rid of property taxes in Texas.

California and Virginia want to expand the offshore drilling act to compensate for potential eco-harm. Let's support this in exchange compensation for what windmills, solar farms, and other energy production has done to Texas.

Yep. I knew as soon as AI took off that nuclear energy was about to make a huge comeback, too. It's the only way. There's too much money to be made.

The US is on pace to add record amounts of green energy to the grid this year and over the next few years.

Powers that be will make infinitely more money on AI than clean energy. They invested in climatech early and made their money. Now theyll pull out and put it all into AI. It was never about the environment. But the little minions that follow these people got gaslit thinking theyre saving the environment.

Always always follow the money.

Exactly right - the Tech companies have waved their magic wand and nuclear power plants and gas power plants are no longer bad for the environment.

Man-made climate change is a sham driven by the left to justify redistribution from makers to takers.

CO2 is only 0.04% of the atmosphere. 99.96% is other stuff, primarily nitrogen and oxygen.

Of the 0.04%, 95% of that is from natural causes like volcanoes, forest fires, decomposition, etc.

Only 5% of the 0.04% is from human activity.

It's a non-starter, yet Joe and Jane Q Public have bought the climate alarmism narrative hook, line, and sinker.

In addition to its lack of capacity and efficiency, green energy is also more expensive. If we are going to talk about actual political myths, then the promise of green energy needs to be at the top of the list.

https://www.wsj.com/opinion/electricity-prices-going-up-green-policy-is-to-blame-4925a0da?st=wSAZ6z&reflink=article_copyURL_share

Quote:

Energy Department data show that electricity prices in California, Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts and New York have risen more than 30% in the past five years compared with just 22.5% nationally. Because of climate policies, these states closed most of their coal-fired power plants and nuclear facilities over the past 15 years, making nonrenewable energy generation more difficult. In comparison, prices in Florida, Georgia, Missouri, Texas and other states hampered less by green energy initiatives are rising less than the U.S. average.

Quote:

California's electricity prices are up 58% over the past five years and have more than doubled since 2008. The state closed all but one of its coal plants and all nuclear facilities except the Diablo Canyon plant. California now has the nation's second-highest residential electricity prices at 31.9 cents a kilowatt-hour in 2024, almost double the national price of 16.5 cents. The state's massive investment in renewable sources, which account for more than half of California's in-state electricity generation in 2024, has driven the price jump.

Add to following that NY recently blocked production expansion of fossil fuel capacity because of feelings. They are committing energy suicide.

Quote:

New York closed its last coal plant in 2020 and the Indian Point nuclear plant in 2021, planning to generate increasing output from renewable sources. But those sources haven't grown fast enough. The New York Independent System Operator now warns of a significant power shortfall, but the New York State Scoping Plan has called for 70% renewable electricity by 2030 and 100% zero-emissions electricity by 2040.

Everything the Democrats believe in is false and a myth. And now we even have their education policies on the rope with poor southern states like Mississippi outperforming sophisticated blue states simply because they abandoned federal DOE standards and went back to the basics.

Will they ever learn? No.

This. I'm betting those changes they made after 3 mile island get revisited so it's no longer impossibly expensive to build nuclear

Coal is terrible compared to nat gas and nuclear. Time to let that one slowly die on the vine.

I'm not saying that we should force plant closures, just not build anymore new ones unless they are right "next door" to coal producing regions.

This is pretty cool to filter by age and look at the ones that are more than 25 years old. What the is industry standard on replacement ages? I know they have gotten better recently, but looks like some are ready for that great open pit in someone else's backyard if they can find the responsible company that still exists (ha ha).

It is very amusing how quickly Big Tech just slapped aside their constituents (the left) and casually declared nuke and gas as the future now.

I wonder if all of the anti-energy crowd realizes yet they are about to lose this war.

Nailed it. You can take it to the bank if the global Marxists are backing off green energy, it is only because they believe AI will give them an easier path to control people. AI is a means to an end.

It also proves once and for all that the left knew green energy was a scam from the word go.

There will be a time, prob in 10-15 years, where we will look back on COVID, trans in women's sports, and Climate Change in embarrassment. The left will claim "the data wasnt clear" or "we just followed the experts at the time". But thats BS. The left religiously bought in and persecuted anyone who questioned it. Fortunately, we have all the receipts.

Anything rendering the insanity of climate alarmism null and void is a welcome development.

Looking over at the EU, where moronic bureaucrats actively seek the destruction of key agricultural sectors in the Netherlands and other nations, the danger of a pseudo-science composed of fundamentalist quacks who never challenge the findings of their leftist-funded peers cannot be more obvious.

I'll await the usual suspects to show up and tell us we need to eat crickets by 2030 or we will no longer see snow in places like the UP of Michigan or Buffalo.

Seriously though - I'm not sure I would put much faith in these estimates just yet. All technologies mature, and as such they generally get more energy efficient per measure of value they produce. Energy consumption will obviously go up over the next 5-10 years, but I think eventually it will come back down as well. The current approach to "AI" (which isn't AGI) is very much a brute force approach. So long as this is the "state of the art" consumption will increase as usage/demand increases. But eventually we will develop better technology that consumes less energy.
