Coal is terrible compared to nat gas and nuclear. Time to let that one slowly die on the vine.

I'm not saying that we should force plant closures, just not build anymore new ones unless they are right "next door" to coal producing regions.

This is pretty cool to filter by age and look at the ones that are more than 25 years old. What the is industry standard on replacement ages? I know they have gotten better recently, but looks like some are ready for that great open pit in someone else's backyard if they can find the responsible company that still exists (ha ha).

Seriously though - I'm not sure I would put much faith in these estimates just yet. All technologies mature, and as such they generally get more energy efficient per measure of value they produce. Energy consumption will obviously go up over the next 5-10 years, but I think eventually it will come back down as well. The current approach to "AI" (which isn't AGI) is very much a brute force approach. So long as this is the "state of the art" consumption will increase as usage/demand increases. But eventually we will develop better technology that consumes less energy.

What a tremendous waste of resources with untold amounts of corruption and money laundering.
