My bet is on an inside job by museum employees or former employees trying to make a point. They went on strike over worker shortages in June claiming it was affecting security.

I am sure that there are lots of cameras and that they have pics of all their faces. I am going to guess that all the thieves are from another country that has little or no facial recognition databases or really does not care if their citizens are criminals as long as they bring the proceeds home. I believe that Europe has been seeing a lot of this the last few years.

My guess is that the thieves are already back in their home country and are now breaking up the jewels and melting down the gold.

The most impressive part about this whole heist is getting in and out of the Louvre in under seven minutes...

I'm sure it's the same group of people who have been burning down all of the churches in France for years now.

Why would they not display the originals? That's what museums do.

A glass case that they literally broke. It's not like it wasn't protected. This is a pretty brazen situation. However, they probably should've had an alarm on the window itself that would've alerted loudly. But yeah, also having very expensive jewels, a constant guard might have been a better road.

But how no one working in the museum didn't try and stop, is the question. I guess no one was around at that particular time. Visitors in there probably thought they worked there.

The initial reports I read says that unarmed security were threatened by the thieves with the angle grinders they were using to break into the display cases. I'm pretty sure this crime could have been stopped not only with a gun (shudder), but a taser or a can of pepper spray.

Funny that they thought it would be easier to pull this thing off during the day vs night.

Insanely large museum.
There are a thousands of priceless items in there. And tens of thousands of tourists.

No alarms around the glass case though? Tha'ts surprising.

Then they are really ****ty security guards. Hopefully they lost their jobs. At the very leash, they could've locked down the museum or alerted the police.

You would be amazed what confidence and a high viz construction vest will allow you to do.
