They should have had Texas as Republic on the ballot. (Meaning the option to vote for it someday on the ballot)

Texas voters truly are idiotic in mass when it comes to amendments. So frustrating...

Austin rejected a 20% increase in city property taxes.

I actively (though quietly) opposed #11 in my latest HOA meeting. Small HOA, perhaps 70% retired. Looked at me like I had three heads :-)

People love getting benefits from OTHER'S money. This is how dems win.

I fought appraisal district 10 years running (won 9). When I turned 65 they valued my house at ~$485K, my fixed appraisal value is $335K. Now I guess my value is mid 600's and I'm going to be paying taxes on $135K?

Taxes suck, but we need to cut the spending, not create carve-outs for special interests.

So we (wife and myself) came out great, but feels very wrong. The fact Texas voters approved all the other crap make me feel a LOT less conflicted, though.

If they would put an obvious headline on each amendment like we had with our local one then more of these would fail.

Our local school tax increase prop started in all caps with "THIS IS A TAX INCREASE".

It failed.

They should have put the following on 11: "THIS IS A TAX INCREASE UNLESS YOU ARE 65 OR OLDER."

Does it bother anyone else the way most of these propositions are written? In such a way that you really do have to dig into details to determine what they are really saying and what the implications are. The average voter is not going to be doing any research.

Why do we even have state reps if they just put all of this on the ballet for us to vote on? Seem like too much direct democracy.

I understand the Texas Constitution was designed to limited the power of the state government. As a result of that designed structure, supposedly there is a need for these type of voter determined amendments.

To further your point, if this line of thought is accurate, why even have a legislature or a representative republic? Just put a state amendment on the ballot for a public vote on jay walking and every other inane issue.

I see things like the water infrastructure, Alzheimer research, trade schools, etc. just codified black holes were tax dollars mysteriously venture with zero accountability. What could go wrong and who is actually getting paid?

I hate to be a conspiracy theorist. But the people making these decisions are making it very difficult to not be one.

Yes, which is why you should research them in common English before you get there. At the voting booth, I scanned them just enough to confirm the amendment was aligned to the amendment number I researched.

I read one of them from beginning to end and it read almost nothing like it did everywhere I read about it online.

29% of voters were against Prop 16, the amendment to restrict voting to citizens. Almost 1/3 of Texans believe we should allow non-citizens to vote. Are you kidding me?

Given New York, there needs to be on next a proposition to restrict voting to transplants for five years. Give them time to learn the Texas culture and not vote by their old habits. Or produce quick flips.

The ballot language requirements are politically motivated. Many entities across the state had to put "This is a tax increase" on a ballot item as a way for legislators to say they are fighting the tax increases. Meanwhile, if overall values for a district go up, and they lower the rate from the prior year or keep it the same, they may have to put this language on the ballot. There are many counties across the state that froze homestead value changes this past year which means your tax bill actually is going down or staying even. But the language is a win for legislators.

Notice they don't impose the same requirements on their own ballot initiatives. Every single new tax deduction/exemption/etc is a tax increase on every other property owner.

If you are a liberal, you see it as a fair gift to those in need. If you're a conservative, you know the pie didn't shrink, but the amount you pay is now guaranteed to increase.

If people want to fight for lower taxes, they'll work to put curbs on the commercial valuation game led by a state senator out of Houston who happens to have a business in the same game. Or they'll push for less exemptions.
