I realize this is old news, but going to the fair for the first time in a while.

They have outlawed concealed carry. In response to a shooting in 2023 by someone that was illegally carrying a gun.

I hate that the places that you would need to carry with the most potential threats are places that you are not allowed to.

For what it is worth, Ken Paxton tried to get that ban overturned last year and it did not work.

The state fair sucks. My wife had been wanting to go for years. Finally last year, our oldest had a 4H event and we went. Afterwards she understood why I vetoed going all these years. I guess it's good they got to see it once.

The Texas legislature refused to do anything about it, and the state courts have upheld their right to ban guns.

Just one more reason our legislature is worthless.

A moral crusader runs the Senate. The Democrats run the House.

Republican voters in Texas need to do an almost complete purge in the primaries and be rid of the old fossils who have been in office since what seems like Reconstruction, and the Democrats who pose as Republicans.

What that results in is those that are so minded have to just drop the place off their visit list. That could start to matter as it is truly surprising how many "ordinary" people in ordinary jobs know are now carrying.

Just avoid the fair. It's way over priced now. Nothing worth doing or seeing. Games are $10. A soft drink 16oz bottle is $5. A turkey leg is $25. The sky tram one way is $14. The best deal is a bottle of water for $2. I hadn't been in a while and usually like the car show but this year it was basically only Chevy, dodge, ford, and gmc. I doubt I will ever go again.

Many local institutions don't scale well. Fairs are supposed to be an opportunity to celebrate distributed ingenuity & accomplishment. When big companies take over it ends up devolving into a tourist trappy mall.

Remove the ability of law abiding citizens to defend themselves because someone committed an illegal act with a weapon they were possessing illegally. Yeah, that makes sense.

As long as they have signs posted that say no guns allowed, then everyone is safe. Murdering psychopaths are known to strictly adhere to proper signage.

The numbers are down this year and I would imagine not being able to carry has alot to do with it.

I would bet people being priced out has a lot more to do with it than whether or not you can carry.

Doubtful - you haven't been able to carry there for a decade.

Ridiculous the legislature hasn't fixed this in the last 15 years since the "can't ban guns on state owned property" law passed

That and how ridiculous prices have gotten. The rides are crazy expensive now. I did not ride any of them.

You have to go when it opens before the thugs wake up and stick to the ag exhibits.

If it's concealed well they'll never know.

They do have metal detectors. Not sure how sensitive they are.

You are spot on. My Grandmother first went in 1925 and went every year till she was 80 because she wanted to see the next invention put at the fair. We went every year but you would catch me going anymore. It is all commercialized now

They also stopped giving free tickets to high school kids in all of the DFW area schools like they have done for years. I'm sure that is another thing that caused lower numbers in addition to the no carry.

That probably makes it safer.

Yeah, with young kids you gotta do things in a certain order. Midway right when the fair opens and gtfo quick (both to save your wallet and avoid the criminal element that shows up later). Grab lunch somewhere off the beaten path then do the ag exhibits for a while. From there move quickly around to the rest of it... car show, obligatory big tex photo, look at stupid kitsch for sale, depart by mid-afternoon.

Not sure that's true. They had always followed the rules and allowed CHL holders to enter past the gun buster signs. That changed last year and that's why Rapier108 is correct that our legislature sucks. Instead of clarifying the ****ing law, they decided it was more important to make me prove my identity and be tracked in order to use an App Store. The slippery slope unintended consequences of the anti porn crusaders starts January 1 because our legislature is worthless.

You're wrong, dude. Up until two years ago you could carry with a license. Some hoodrats shot someone and then, as usual, they went woke. I lived right across the street from the fairgrounds and never went.

Edit. August of 2024 is when they changed the fact you couldn't carry.
