Trump is nuking headcount.

I've looked and don't see anything about a lower standard or special circumstances for terminations during a shutdown.

Is he using the shutdown as cover or justification (i.e. they were deemed non essential). In other words, this part of government is deemed non essential so the gov has a better hand in court if sued?

Why not do it before now?

They'll be rehired once critical things stop working and the cycle will repeat.

From what I understand a RIF eliminates the position so those jobs won't come back. In a shutdown, the Executive Branch has expanded authority so this is his opportunity to cut to the quick.

These are non essential workers. The employees in the critical parts of the government are still working.

They should never have been hired since they are non essential.

As of the summer, DOGE cuts were estimated at 300,000 (voluntary and involuntary). Latest etimated puts the rehire numbers in the "hundreds" and some of that was court ordered.

The idea that most workers had to be rehired does not comport with reality.

Outside of the military, there is nothing the government does that so critical that they need to rehire useless dead weight.

Have you ever tried to fired a federal employee? There are some good employees but 75% are average to below average. I served 26 years and work around them still. They have very low standards for acceptable performance.

If you've ever executed a RIF, you know a few rehires or backfills are likely, especially if you have additional departures on top of the RIF. Usually, this is a very small amount relative to the RIF. Hard to get RIFs perfect, just like it's hard to get expansions perfect.

Incorrect.

I'm talking about RIFs happening right now. From Friday:

"More than 4,000 federal employees received layoff notices Friday as part of the Trump administration's broad effort to reshape the government while it remains shutdown, according to a court filing Friday."

Also, excluding this round of RIFs, you're still wrong.

Estimates are 100k+ employees have either taken the offer to resign or have been fired!

Actually, that is exactly how math can work when you use average, now if you are talking median that is a different story .

The NY Times is paid for political propaganda of the left. If the health and safety of sour citizens depends on little Faucis with god complexes and poor understandings of their field of expertise, then we are doomed.

Regardless, believe nothing the NY Times publishes. Nothing. It's not based in fact.

You need a symmetric distribution to say this. Also it is possible the poster you responded to was thinking of the average of the distribution of all workers (government and private sector) and describing how federal workers place within that overall distribution.

Most of the people in my area are Feds. I know plenty that have been laid off once or twice this year, but not a single one that didn't get their job back.

I'm not saying all the layoffs are fake, but for a lot of people it's been sound and fury signifying nothing.
