I think China pulling the rare earth's card, blocking US soybean imports, and slapping an array of fees on shipments from Chinese made vessels were attempts to create last minute leverage in the planned trade talks with the US.

Thought it was an interesting move when Trump said "there's no more reason to meet with Xi", basically saying that the US is done negotiating with China on this.

As for now, doubt China has this in mind. They have no reason to not try to wait for another weak administration and not one that will fight like old style America.

I saw an interesting data point yesterday.

China is adding nearly 1MM bbls of oil to their strategic reserves per day this calendar year. Maybe they're taking advantage of buying Russia's discounted crude pricing. But they may be stockpiling for future war maneuvers as well.

No we have let everything dangerously degrade. Remember Obama had 8 years and Biden 4. Bush & Cheney were focused on anti-terror type war and not fleet logistics.

Our real advantage lies in our ability to avoid direct action if want to - the ability to establish a blockade well outside the zone China's navy may well end up able to dominate. But short term you probably are not holding East China Sea or Taiwan Straits.

Naval AUV Drones like the Orca and Manta are the key to checking the Chinese navy. Let them build more targets

If China ever makes a move on Taiwan and is able to capture the island, it might be a good idea to just glass the place and move on.
