So if a movie is shot overseas, there will be a 100% tariff on it. So they have to shoot it in the US and keep pay US services to make it keeping money in the country.

I hadn't realized that this was a problem and was being exploited but maybe it is.

I support it. More are coming. I think this should be a limited tariff, like for 5 years for things to stabilize.

Trump says US to impose 100% tariff on movies made outside the country

  • Uncertainty over legal authority and implementation of tariffs
  • Analyst warns higher costs could be passed on to consumers

Quote:

Sept 29 (Reuters) - President Donald Trump said on Monday he would impose a 100% tariff on all films produced overseas that are then sent into the U.S., repeating a threat made in May that would upend Hollywood's global business model.

The step signals Trump's willingness to extend protectionist trade policies into cultural industries, raising uncertainty for studios that depend heavily on cross-border co-productions and international box-office revenue.

"Our movie making business has been stolen from the United States of America, by other Countries, just like stealing candy from a baby," Trump said in a post on his Truth Social.
However, it was not immediately clear what legal authority Trump would use to impose a 100% tariff on foreign-made films.
The White House did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment on how the tariffs would be implemented.
Top U.S. studios Warner Bros Discovery (WBD.O)
, opens new tab, Paramount Skydance (PSKY.O), opens new tab and Netflix (NFLX.O), opens new tab also did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Comcast (CMCSA.O)
, opens new tab declined to comment.

"There is too much uncertainty, and this latest move raises more questions than answers," said PP Foresight analyst Paolo Pescatore.
"For now, as things stand, costs are likely to increase, and this will inevitably be passed on to consumers," he said.
The president had first floated the idea of a movie tariff in May but offered few details, leaving entertainment executives unsure whether it would apply to specific countries or all imports.
After the announcement in May, a coalition of American film unions and guilds sent a letter to Trump, urging him to support tax incentives for domestic film production in a reconciliation package being drafted in Congress, aiming to help return more movie and television projects to the U.S.
The U.S. film industry recorded a $15.3 billion trade surplus in 2023, backed by $22.6 billion in exports to international markets, according to the Motion Picture Association.

Hollywood can't afford that!

So if they were to do another Indiana Jones movie, all of which typically had significant pieces shot abroad, would such a production be 100% tariffed even though some of the movie is shot in the States?

It's amazing how much cheaper it is to produce entertainment in Ireland. On his podcast, Rob Lowe talked about how they film his game show "The Floor" in Ireland. They fly everyone out there (including the 100 contestants each season), pay for their accommodations, etc. and it's still cheaper than filming in California.

All of the Avenger series was filmed just down the road from us in Georgia. They are just now moving to UK due to costs.

I think this is more about movies/shows filmed in Canada and elsewhere for cost purposes. Not forcing studios to recreate places outside of the US on a studio lot in Hollywood.

100% for it other than some movies that would be best shot on location. I'm thinking WW2 movies, period pieces abroad, films that take place in a certain area that need that area (V for Vendetta in London for example). Saving Private Ryan probably wouldn't have felt the same if filmed in California or Georgia or NY

T&P for Netflix.

Half their movies are dubbed now it seems like....

If these tariffs prevent any more stupid superhero movies from being made, I'm all for it.

Movies are going to be made by AI now anyway.

Koreans have been lighting up with hits on Netflix. I hope this does not change. Hollywood needs the competition, and Netflix is bringing it to them with great foreign content.

I'm guessing they don't save a significant amount since they're taking the production to Ireland. I'm pretty sure Ireland incentives.

One of my favorite shows in the last several years was They Shall Not Grow Old - based on Peter Jackson's restoration of old WWI film footage. It had only a very limited release in the U.S. and was so successful it was expanded. It's now available on streaming.

I'm not sure it would even make sense to show this in the U.S. if a 100% tariff on the production cost was required.

Ultimately this move is going to mean a lot less small market content available in the U.S.

Its losing things like this that make this move seem a bit ill-conceived. But I know nothing of the nuts and bolts of it.

And their quality wouldn't take a hit. Likely end up being an addition by subtraction situation.

Nah he's got plenty of sports celebrities to make movies in America with.

An entire AI movie will have some novelty effect but nothing beyond that. People want real stars. Subsequent all-AI movies will do badly.

AI will NOT replace today's movies.

Young folks have over 100 years of great movies to choose from. Just about any movie with IMBD rating over 7 will be entertaining. And no tariff. If I can figure out how to see free, non tariff movies, y'all can too.

Not probably…it definitely wouldn't. This sucks for historical movies that are based on real events. Which unfortunately is what I enjoy the most

They don't need to be brought back. They were perfect the way they were. Don't f*** with the original. Hollywood screws it up everytime they try to do a remake.

They were perfect. I'd like more but then we would first need some men to act in them. Hollywood is mostly soy boys now.

How about a tariff on media produced in CA?!? The whole Hollywood scene needs to be bankrupted so that "outsiders" get a chance to break into their monopolized distribution system.

Not near enough info out to really form an opinion on this, other than tariffs overall are bad long term. Have to wait for the EO - has one been published yet or is this still all just a grand idea with actual concrete decisions still TBD?
