In 2018 my 75 year old mother on Medicare had a massive stroke. She was life flighted to the hospital and spent 10 days in ICU with multiple MRI's and all kinds of tests. My dad paid about $2500 in hospital bills and a little over $900 for the life flight.
My son was life flighted to the children's hospital in Temple in 2015 from CS. We received a bill for almost $50,000 because the life flight company was "out of network" and insurance only paid $1,900. We ended up settling with the life flight for about $6,000. We didn't have a choice about the life flight. The ER in CS didn't have a child's size ventilation tube or something so it was "absolutely necessary" he be life flighted right away.
In December of last my daughter had a swollen optic nerve. The doctor ordered an MRI. The doctor ordered the wrong type of MRI or hospital did the wrong MRI, so she had to have another. Obviously our fault. We have a bill for nearly $100,000 we are negotiating with the hospital on right now. The insurance paid $1,700.
The costs and fees are all made up and what the insurance says it pays doesn't matter.
So yeah, eff all hospitals and their billing. Ask for a detailed bill every time.
