You forgot to add the meat of that tweet....

"We are spending $405 million a day on SNAP. About 10% is going to sugary drinks. If you add candies to that, it's about 13% to 17%.

$40MM a DAY on sugar water.....

Personally, food stamps should be banned all together. If you're able to walk, get yourself a job. Tired of paying for low life's that do not want to work.
Dead people are notoriously bad at returning calls.

Long term it will help with Healthcare costs. The US spends almost double our peers and has a shorter life expectancy

Totally agree. I was just pointing out the ridiculousness of the SNAP program.

$40 million a day adds up quick.

Hint: it wasn't the poor folks that lobbied Congress to get soft drinks to be part of the program.

Companies are going to do whatever is good for themselves and I have no problem with that.

But there should be guardrails. Let's get more nutrition into kids, less junk

Wow just did calculations for a whopping 14.6 billion a year that the tax payers are subsidizing the drink market at about 5% and the ingredients behind them. As well as the supermarkets.

3% for candies is 12.15 million dollars per day for a total of 4.434 billion per year
7% for candies is 28.35 million dollars per day for a total of 10.348 billion per year a staggering 9% of the confectionary market as stated with the number below

From Grok

The U.S. soft drinks market, which includes sugary drinks like regular soda, fruit drinks, sports drinks, energy drinks, and sweetened coffee/tea beverages, was valued at approximately $286.25 billion in 2023. Projections estimate it will grow to around $601.04 billion by 2033, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.7% from 2024 to 2033. Specifically for sugary soft drinks, the market was valued at $35.4 billion in 2024, with forecasts suggesting it will reach $41.7 billion by 2035 at a CAGR of 1.5%. These figures reflect retail sales across various channels, including supermarkets, convenience stores, and foodservice outlets

In 2023, U.S. confectionery sales reached $48 billion, with chocolate accounting for $19.3 billion, non-chocolate candy (like gummies and hard candy) at $21.7 billion, and gum and mints at $4.1 billion. Projections estimate sales will hit $61 billion by 2028, driven by consumer demand for treats despite inflation. Halloween alone accounted for $3.5 billion in candy sales in 2024, with about 96% of households purchasing candy for the holiday. Americans consume roughly 22-24 pounds of candy per person annually, with Halloween making up about 25% of yearly candy sales.

"Americans consume roughly 2224 pounds of candy per person annually, with Halloween making up about 25% of yearly candy sales"

No way the average person eats over 1 ton of candy per person per year.

That would be 6lbs of candy per person per day. One lb of chocolate has 2000 calories, so that would be roughly 12,000 calories a day from candy alone.

I eat maybe 15-25lbs of candy per year

On more than one occasion I have seen people at Walmart buying entire shopping carts full of soda. Sometimes multiple carts worth. They are often paying with Food Stamps/WIC. They generally appear to be Indian (dot) or Asian and run convenience stores in the Hood.

I have heard that they are buying WIC Cards for $0.60/Dollar or they trade beer/cigs for the cards. They are then stocking their shelves of their store with the soda from Walmart which they markup considerably.

Lots of Fraud in the System. Cutting out soda and candy will only put a dent in it.

I can see the next Democratic Presidential Candidate on stage, gesturing with a fist to make a point,

"A grandma is sitting in Denver, or Des Moines, and all across America, and they have to choose between a Snickers Bar and a Coke snack, and valuable diabetes medicines. Why should old people and trans fluid women of color have to make that choice? We need to fully fund and allow Americans and our Recently Relocated Citizens of opportunity to buy their corn pops, Hershey bars, and Pepsi with government-funded programs! They should not have to choose!"
