Trump announces 'massive' trade deal with Japan with 15% tariffs

This is breaking news so I'll add more to OP as information comes out.

ETA:
Quote:

"A year ago, that level of tariffs would be shocking. Today, we breathe a sigh of relief," said Brian Jacobsen, chief economist at Annex Wealth Management.

In his tariff letter sent out to Japan earlier this month, Trump had threatened 25% tariff on its exports to the U.S. from Aug. 1, one percentage point higher from the 24% rate announced during his April 2 "Liberation Day" tariffs.

Japanese automobiles imported into the U.S. already attract a 25% tariff in line with the rest of the countries. Auto exports to the U.S. are a cornerstone of Japan's economy, making up 28.3% of all shipments in 2024

Japan is not paying any tariffs. Consumers are paying or American companies are paying.

Japan doesn't want our cars for numerous reasons.

as for the rest of it, safe to assume it's untrue or vastly exaggerated to the point of meaninglessness

No they don't. And if you ever look at cars Japanese drive you would know why they don't want our big American ones.

By the same token we don't want theirs. The cars Nissan, Toyota, Mazda, Lexus et al sell in the US are US cars made by Japanese brands. They aren't Japanese cars.

Compared to the alternative which is a collapse in trade with Japan yes this is good but being better than a trade war is a pretty low bar to get over

If they are opening their rice market up some, that's a big deal. Japan has really high tariffs on imported rice.

Why? Build a couple more Nissan or Toyota car plants and you have a start.

The car stuff actually gets a little more interesting when you realize that APMA at IRS and NTA have been slow rolling transfer pricing stuff for the auto manufacturers and other Japanese parented companies for years. There's a good bit of tax revenue to unlock there, but it doesn't do a thing for jobs. It won't keep the cost of your Japanese car down and you won't be able to point to tariffs as the reason for the increase, especially since a lot of those cars aren't even made in Japan. They're made with Japanese IP but in the US or Mexico.

You are SOOOOO RIGHT BRO!! The Japanese TOTALLY don't have a huge subset of their culture that literally copies EVERYTHING American from every time period mind you, up to & including today, which means Hellcats & Pickups are gonna go like hot cakes/ hot saki!

Take a look at the sudden ascendency of it's own MAGA-like political party (who parades with Trump portraits) suddenly making-up 1/3 of Japan's governing body; USA is big in Japan right now (especially since they know Trump will nuke China if necessary)!!

AND, who knows, they might eat the hell outta Uncle Ben's rice too... if it has the ORIGINAL cover!

In other words, don't be so pessimistic, especially with defeatist claims of 'zero'; and if you insist, what about the investment & jobs? Is that something Americans "have zero interest in"?

Japan agreed to increase the portion of its rice imports from the U.S. within the existing "minimum access" framework under the World Trade Organization (WTO), which allows Japan to import up to 770,000 metric tons of rice tariff-free annually. This framework will be maintained, meaning Japan will not fully open its rice market but will shift a higher proportion of its tariff-free rice imports to U.S.-grown rice, particularly medium-grain rice used for staple foods, while reducing imports of long-grain rice. - Grok

I didnt know either so I asked AI. Prior to the deal, Japan imported approximately 350,000 tons of rice from the U.S. in

Could be a big win for California rice growers. Southern grown rice isn't a type the Japanese consumer likes.

The Japanese are the big winner from an auto perspective, tariffs down from 25% to 19% and they have a locked in cost they can work from to pass on to the consumer. American car makers have deal 25% tariffs on steal, 50% on copper, etc. that can change on a whim, so they don't have that luxury of certainty in pricing.
