I had never heard of
Captagon before reading your post. Turns out it was worth like
$57 billion annually
to the Assad regime. No wonder they're fighting a brutal civil war. Probably more like different drug cartels fighting for control of the Captagon drug trade than it is establishing a particular method of government.
It's amazing to me how all of this "religious" violence in the Middle East always turns out to be really about controlling oil money, government power, illicit drug trade, etc. Islam in particular is like custom made to provide a motivation (excuse) to form the fighting forces that wage these wars. In fact, you can argue that islam is, was, and always will be about creating fighting forces that are motivated to die in "jihad" for some leader's nefarious purposes.
Not to wander off topic too far, but that's what makes iran so dangerous IMO. They already have the power and the oil money, but want to end Israel and the entire western world to satisfy their prophesies. They do appear to be truly motivated by religious beliefs which can't be reasoned with.
