Quote:

Speaker Mike Johnson told Republican holdouts on the party's crucial budget plan in a private meeting Wednesday night that they could oust him from the speakership if he doesn't follow through with his fiscal promises, according to three people with direct knowledge of the matter who were granted anonymity to discuss it.

Johnson pledged to abide by the House budget instructions, including a minimum of $1.5 trillion in spending cuts, for the domestic policy megabill that Republicans are now able to pursue on party lines after Thursday's successful vote.

The Senate's version of BBB that Johnson is blindly accepting exceeds the House budget rules by more than $500 billion. So should the fiscal hawks hold his feet to the fire? I say yes. He has been out of his depth the entire time and is a continuation of the same crap spending "deals" we've seen under prior leadership.

He should have been ousted for voting to allow IC to continue warrantless spying on Americans. Every R voted against it. He voted with the Dems and broke the tie on that vote to allow it. He has zero principles.

Yes.

McCarthy said he wasn't going to push omnibus bills, and went back on that thus got ousted.

Johnson said the same thing and clearly went against that. It doesn't matter that Trump is pushing a big boondoggle bill, Johnson can send him something more fiscally responsible and in smaller chunks like he promised, yet he chose to go against that.

I'm sure he has principles, even if they're mercenary, MAGA, or whatever.

Zero principles is what you say when someone does something that doesn't align with your principles.

I would oust Thune first. He's the one who didn't fire the Senate Parliamentarian who took out a lot of the cost cutting stuff. That's the steaming pile of crap that Johnson was handed.

Johnson's job is to get Trump's agenda passed.

So considering the slim margins he's working with, he's doing a damn good job.

Are you claiming that this is an Omnibus bill?

I was under the impression it was a Reconciliation Bill

Funny, I thought our government was a Republic with three separate and equal branches of government. When did we pass an amendment making Congress submissive to the Executive?

Johnson is foregoing his fiscal and legislative responibility duties at best or being lazy/corrupt lumping the work all together at worst.

Why would the party oust a Speaker who is going to get the party's bill passed?

They have the votes to pass the thing as soon as Jeffries runs out of things to say…

Tell me you didn't read the OP without telling me you didn't read it. Supposedly part of the deal was that he would work to pass something that complied with the House budget requirements. This doesn't. The thing he agree to if he didn't comply with the budget agreement he made to get those people to vote was that he should be ousted as Speaker.

Why did the GOP oust McCarthy especially after he wrangled the cats to pass a budget?

No need to be rude…I read the OP…

But again…name one Speaker who has been ousted by his party after he was able to get his President's bill passed?

It's not going to happen…

McCarthy put the Dems in a tough spot by actually passing a budget when Schumer and Biden were expecting a CR.

If you're wanting to level your sights at anyone, it should be John Thune. He is the one that teamed up with the Democrat appointed Parliamentarian to eviscerate the House-passed bill using the dubious "Byrd Rule" gambit.

That was the sham that took the teeth out of this bill. Curiously, this same Parliamentarian had no issues with the climate and health care policy changes enacted with the "Inflation Reduction Act", which was also passed using the reconciliation process.

McCarthy negotiated the Sept 2023 continuing resolution that Biden/Schumer wanted to avoid government shutdown and default on US debt…

THAT's why he was ousted…

Johnson is also responsible for saying "Hey, this violates House rules," just like the Senate can say this violates the Byrd Rule.

They voted for Trump and his agenda. Trump never pushed massive spending cuts or smaller government.

Not really. He was ousted because Gaetz wanted his activity covered up that CR was nice cover. But I will concede he didn't do enough with his debt limits and cuts bill passed in April 2023 to force more from Biden.in the Fiscal Responsibility Act in May of 2023.

Doge discovered the mechanism of how all our politicians are corrupted. We have to assume that every politician is compromised.

So yeah, I say, let's replace them all

It's an almost impossible job. Replacing everyone that steps into it will make it impossible and will end up putting Hakeem Jeffries into the role in 2026.

Johnson did the same thing. The Jan 18th, 2024 CR was passed by Johnson and the Dems! It would have failed otherwise! All Democrats voted "yes" on the bill.
