So they all need to go back… or they don't?

I'm tired of this cluster. The message changes daily, and when I voted for "they all have to go back", that meant the strawberry pickers in California.

Don't like this at all. Send them home and let the market sort it out.

I think someone who has been here that long, is productive, has paid taxes, and has never been arrested should receive amnesty on a case-by-case basis.

We haven't enforced immigration like we should have been since *forever* and we ought to focus our resources on criminals, the unemployed, and those who drain tax dollars/services.

Not great but it is good optics against the "Trump is racist" line

Let's all assume, for a moment, we have industries who need this labor force.

Given that, I'm ok with the hard working labor staying, providing they register with the U.S. (perhaps through their employer), and then remain here legally. I also think this registration needs to have an expiration/renewal date. You continue to work hard, and produce for our country, you can stay...very similar to a work visa for migrant labor.

Vetted, hard-working immigrants were never the problem. Vetting them and letting them in legally should have always been the goal.

But everyone else needs to go. And that is still millions of people.

It removes the only talking point the left has, as they act like moms and dads and hard working people are being deported by Trump...not the criminals.

Wonder if the Dems are willing to make concessions they have no intention of honoring in exchange for an amnesty deal.

Sound familiar?

I don't like it, but that's the realpolitik of the situation...no doubt about it.

The failure over decades to adhere to and enforce the laws definitely reduce the standing from which we'd now try to enforce them retroactively. (Yeah, I get it, they're still criminals by being here illegally...no need to point it out).

So there are farmers that have been illegally employing illegal immigrants for 20 years, and now they are "forced" to hire new illegal immigrants to replace them?

Aren't those the kind of employers that should be arrested?

Paid taxes on what we know of or on everything?

Also, how do we vette that many millions of people?

We can't have rules for Juan and not Jose when they both committed the same act of illegally entering the country.

From the pragmatic politics angle, your last point is a really strong one. Take away the talking point, and it isn't a big sacrifice in return.

Also, If you deport people like this, it gives the Dems and/or MSM ammunition to focus on them and argue how "nazi" the Rs are acting. It's bad optics. The overwhelming majority of the country is in favor of getting the "bad" illegals out. So focus on them. Let a handful of the good ones stay and it kills the Dem narrative.

Shockingly polling shows that an actual majority of Americans support deporting ALL illegal immigrants. If ever there was a time to do it, it's now. Ride the wave.

And do what with them? Citizenship? Green cards? They better have to register for any sort of amnesty and any companies they work for better be showing it's not cash under the table.

Deport them all, have them apply for legal work status or citizenship, then start bringing them back. Heck, spin off some of the other government orgs to assist in speeding up the process. But get it all above board and documented.

I'd bet that allowing working longtime illegals to become citizens while deporting all others polls much higher. It's just a political move to do what sits the best while actually accomplishing the ultimate goal

They can be sponsored by their employers, each individually assigned an identifier. It's not that difficult.

It's basically a student ID, but for workers...similar to a visa, but expedited.

Look, I dont disagree with 'they all have to go back'. But that's literally impossible over the next 4 years. And employers in various industries are panicking over losing their work force.

Track their work force. Let them continue to contribute, on a recurring basis. Everyone else can leave. Commit a crime?...you're not renewed. We find out you're a criminal using employment as a cover?...deported like the rest. Only allow the hard working contributors to come/stay.

It's really what should have been done all along...and it removes every talking point the Dems have about illegal immigrants while we continue to deport.

If you think about it, it would be pretty genius of him to fix our migrant labor issue, while stopping illegal immigration.

I get it, he violated the law. But even the Romans back in biblical times understood how a tiny bit of amnesty can help placate a mob/crowd. Remember, Pontius Pilate gave the crowd the power to pardon one and the Jews passed over Jesus and pardoned Barrabas.

There's an opportunity for a grand deal on immigration if the parties could just work together on it. The backdrop for it would be recognition that we need immigrants to sustain our population, but they must come in legally if they want full rights extended to them. A compromise could be something like this:
  • Any illegal immigrants here today who are living a productive life and not a criminal would be eligible for a "yellow card," where they would receive temporary visitor status good for 3 years. At the end of every 3 years, the US government in its sole discretion could renew it for another 3 years, or not, depending on the US need for immigrants and the particular skill set of the yellow card holder.
  • Only illegals here today are eligible for a yellow card. Any future illegal immigrants would be deported immediately when in custody.
  • The yellow card holder must report all income and pay all relevant taxes.
  • Any criminal activity would result in immediate termination of the yellow card and deportation.
  • No "anchor babies" for a yellow card holder; they are not a birthright US citizen.
  • Yellow card status does not give preferential status for a green card (permanent US resident).
  • Green card can only be achieved by yellow cards self-deporting and coming back in the proper way. Get in line with everybody else.
  • A baby born under green card status would be a birthright US citizen.
  • Green card holders can apply for US citizenship under the naturalization process just like any other legal immigrant
  • Over time, yellow card holders will either die off or convert to green card by self-deporting and coming back in the right way. The yellow card eventually sunsets.

There's no money or political power to be gained by solving the immigration problems.
It's better for our elected officials (read: not the rest of us) for there to be no compromise and to sow anger and frustration with the opposing side

There will never be any attempt to send away millions or tens of millions of people. Hell, at every opportunity even just with this L.A. thing it seems like everyone on our side feels like they need to defensively emphasize how ICE is ONLY going after hardened violent criminals. There's no way there will ever be any serious effort to remove people who are simply here illegally. I'm certainly not defending that, I hate it, I'm saying that's the reality and it always was. Anything else is just campaign BS.

That has to weighed against an uncomfortable truth… There really ARE jobs in this country that Americans don't want such as being hunched over in a field all day.

Either we find a way to employ that labor where we are or we import the fruit (pun intended) of that labor from somewhere else.

there used to be a thriving migrant workforce between the US and Mexico, but politicians (on both sides) wanted to look strong and made it so difficult for legal workers to return from Mexico, that it essentially made it less risky just stay here illegally
