Basically, there are a few electrical engineering software tools that are used around the world to make electrical products and the good ones are US products. As Trump would say, let's see what happens.

Well that's kind of pointless. Can guarantee you they already have a copy of the source code and will just release their own version if they don't already have one.

We should still try. We have to cause Chyna as much friction as possible.

It's good to give more disincentive to intellectual property theft with strategic implications. China built their modernized economy by stealing and copying everything they could starting in the late 1980's to early 1990's and only escalating since then. Copying an idea then producing it on the cheap by cutting corners and using cheaper labor and state funded resources is one thing they are quite good at.

Meh, instead of banning it, just force the companies to include a stuxnet-style worm in their code that can be triggered when needed.

China does the same for us.

It could be a pretty big deal. This isn't affecting Chinese companies. This is affecting US companies designing and building product in China. Most of the name brand companies still design and manufacture in China with US engineering oversight. If this goes through then 10's of thousands of Chinese engineers are out of work because they can't use design tools anymore. Instead of going after hundreds of ditch diggers with tariffs Trump prohibited the two or three shovel manufacturers from selling shovels in China. It will force US companies out of China and into more friendly low cost countries.
