Agree on outsourcing being the huge risk here. Software work can basically be done anywhere given all the remote work tools. We absolutely have to encourage hiring and building in America, using tax, tarriff and other tools.

They can outsource all they want but as long as the US gets a cut out of it. Make it financially a loss to outsource.
Trump has shown that he loves tariffs so this is coming next. He likely did not want to open up too many fronts at the same time.

Example:
Steve charges $100k.
Kumar in India charges 60k.
CEO Mike McEvil of Crooked Corp sees dollar bills, knows that if you pay peanuts, you get monkeys but cannot help himself. Decides to fire Steve and hire Kumar. $40k savings - Yay!

Trump comes in, says wait a minute. If you hire Kumar in India, you pay 100% tariff. So you pay $60k to the US Govt, so effectively Mike McEvil pays $120k to hire Kumar in India instead of $100k to hire Steve in the US.

Now I am all for Crooked Corp hiring all their staff overseas! Any loopholes exploited like hiring 100% in India will get a 300% fine.

Now let's see how many Corps offshore.

Your intentions are good but I don't see any suggestions how to do it. Just "remove regulations" means nothing, it just lets corps do whatever the hell they want for themselves, not benefiting the country.

Corps will not do anything other than for themselves. We need to make them do it. By force. By the US Govt. I don't like paying taxes. But I do. Why? Because if I don't, I will go to jail.

And once you train AI to read/interpret/respond to scan results it'll be able to fix its own mistakes so the number of experienced devs you need to staff decreases even more significantly.

Doesn't work. Look at the number of companies leaving California.
Multinational companies will leave, and that will make it even more punitive on the remaining US companies.

There have to be economic incentives to keep jobs in the US. It can be a carrot and stick approach though, doesn't have to be all carrots.

As an example, Singapore offers 15% corporate tax, but you have to employ a certain percentage of locals, and you have to provide them training, etc. Worked out well for us, because we were paying 25% corporate tax in the US.

No one is leaving CA. The ones who left are all going back. Tesla will go back too. Silicon Valley is still oozing with people.

The OPT is far less of an issue than the folks who come straight from India or China on H-1. Talked to a guy today that is highly skilled and highly compensated with a BS and MS in Comp Engineering from a T20 School that didn't get picked in the lottery and is probably going to have to go back to South Korea. He's not likely to get an O-1 since he doesn't have a PhD. You have to be pretty freaking smart to get in as an International to a T20 Comp Eng program at the BS level, that's a Top 1% Type for sure among immigrants.

What they need to focus on is putting all the consulting firms like Cognizant and Tata effectively out of business. They flood the zone with folks with a BS from some third tier Engineering school in India and pay them cheap because they sponsor them. That's the true abuse.

That doesn't convince me you aren't Barnes, but I'll respond for everyone else reading this thread.

Eliminating work visas will dramatically reduce the labor pool, which will 1) drive up labor costs and 2) reduce the number of qualified workers. Together, both will substantially reduce corporate profitability and likely drive lots of companies out of business. That means all of our 401(k)s will get crushed right as social security is running out of money and cutting benefits.

Second, fewer high quality workers and a total higher labor cost means that the US population gets worse quality goods at a higher price. That is, all of us take a huge hit to our quality of life because our purchasing power takes a huge hit and the stuff we can afford is lower quality.

Eliminating work visas is a terrible idea.

I work in AI myself. Not just using ChatGPT but under the hood. It is good but it is not magic. Wait until all code is written by AI and companies lose control, the fun will begin then.
Same. It is just another tool. And it certainly can be quite useful in terms of productivity, but I still have to check what it generates for accuracy.

Yup. This is going to backfire.

We need to make American companies more competitive, and make it enticing for American companies to keep jobs in the US. This will accelerate moving jobs overseas.

Your intentions are good but I don't see any suggestions how to do it. Just "remove regulations" means nothing, it just lets corps do whatever the hell they want for themselves, not benefiting the country.

Corps will not do anything other than for themselves. We need to make them do it. By force. By the US Govt. I don't like paying taxes. But I do. Why? Because if I don't, I will go to jail.
auctioning off the limited number of visas is likely the answer. If Google has to pay$50k per visa to keep Microsoft from taking all of them, then they might decide that hiring the new grad working as a bartender is cheaper than paying for the visa. Only the brightest and most experienced foreigners would be worth the price.
