So according to the article it uses passive sensors as opposed to the familiar ignition interlock.

Ok.

My question is what does the vehicle do if it passively evaluates that the driver has consumed alcohol?

How does it prevent DWI drugs? I would say that at least 20% of my firms new DWI clients now involve drugs instead of alcohol.
And what happens when that passive technology fails or has errors? Everyone has had a phone or some kind of technology lock up (BSOD anyone) in there lives multiple times per year.

Hell, there are year long threads on apple forums about people having an odd error* with their iPhone/iPad and despite multiple attempts to fix both themselves with online advise, and even with Apple tech support, the problem persists.

Tons of threads on people having forced updates from Ford/GM/Stelantis onto their auto/truck touch screen and it locks up for completely fails.

This auto-DUI system is a disaster waiting to happen.

*There errors don't necessarily render the phone non-functional, but just a single option that should do one thing, does another. This will for sure happen with the 'passive DUI sensor' and leave someone who is perfectly sober stuck somewhere with no ability to override the feature and get home.

The 2021 Infrastructure Disaster Bill included a requirement for all new vehicles to includes "anti-drunk driving technology" by 2026.

While the technology is pretty cool and I would want to voluntarily put it in my kid's car, this is typical Nanny State garbage by the democrats.

What are the chances the Trump administration will choose to simply not enforce it, or it gets repealed while we have a Republican majority? The attempt to repeal it a few years ago didn't go over well: https://usa.streetsblog.org/2022/08/01/these-gop-senators-want-to-protect-motorists-right-to-drive-drunk
Will it be replaced with the mandatory urine test? How about a mandatory IQ test.

I assume autos owned by congress men/women and their staffs are exempt.

I'm so sick of the BS that gets shoved in new vehicles for the betterment of our lives that only makes the vehicle a complicated piece of crap. Like the auto turn off at vehicle stops. Here was a new one that pissed me off to no end this weekend. I recently got a new F-150. It's a company vehicle. I was trying to tow a U-Haul home after daughter's college graduation. I couldn't just push a button and the tow haul come on. Nope, I had to calibrate the thing. I guess ford thinks that every person has 10 acres of flat open parking lot to calibrate for towing. No matter how many times I tried following the instructions the thing wouldn't calibrate. I would've had to drive in left then right circles for miles to get it to work. How the hell am I supposed to do that on roads. Finally I just gave up. Had to tow all the way back from CO in the mountains with no tow haul setting. Infuriating.

Elon needs to hurry up with the self driving. Drink too much? Just have the car drive you home.

I was in downtown Austin over the weekend and saw the Waymo cars driving around 5th and 6th St all day but never saw a person in one. Are they just driving them around for testing purposes?

I was in Old Town Scottsdale today around noon and saw several. That's pretty typical but a few months ago I saw one take off passing cars on Scottsdale Road and weaving in and out to the point everyone had to slow way down. I'll let you guys work the kinks out but they're common here.

Saw a video of a guy in one that was stuck doing circles in a parking lot.

About 6 months ago there was a story on the news about some guys on a golf trip here missing their flight because the Waymo was just circling the block. I see them often but I'm not interested.

How stupid is this? If someone gets arrested for a DWI/DUI, they are usually required by law to have one of these devices installed on their vehicle anyway during their probation period. But now everyone has to have one?

yes, basically everyone is guilty until they prove their innocence....
