Two Mexican nationals in the U.S. on nonimmigrant visas were arrested during a traffic stop in Colorado last month while transporting 180,000 rounds of ammunition, authorities said Wednesday.

…During the traffic stop, the detectives discovered approximately 150 boxes of .308 ammunition and approximately 30 boxes of 7.62 ammunition, officials said. Each box was labeled as containing 1,000 rounds…

…In Salt Lake City, the men stopped at a firearms and ammunition store, where Amador Garcia bought the ammunition, according to the affidavit…

… "[Martinez Solis] further explained that he did not know the intent with the ammunition but that he believed it was destined for Pueblo," the affidavit stated. Pueblo is a city in Colorado located about 113 miles south of Denver…

Just transporting the ammo Americans won't transport.

And think about: without these hard-working Mexicans, Americans would have to transport our own ammo.

I don't see the problem. 180,000 rounds of small arms ammunition doesn't seem probative of a crime. They were arrested in Utah, not Canada, right? Will the new Senator Mittens (Curtis) go visit them in jail and cry about their treatment a la Van Hollen?

I'd be happy to take it off their hands for a small fee.

Learned something new from google, apparently Ammo can also be subject to straw purchase laws at both State and Federal levels.

Is it legal for non-citizens to buy ammo?

Ammunition (such as this) is not a controlled substance, and requires no identification to purchase, or the completion of a federal form as to who is buying it (NFA etc).

As per above, I did not know until today that there may be 'straw man' legalities, though. Also, above a certain amount I dunno if there are hazmat transport requirements.

lol. If an American in another country on a visa tried to buy 180,000 rounds of ammo, they'd be arrested and deported.

It ought to be illegal in the US for anyone to purchase that much at one time.

How much ammo should one be able to purchase and who gets to decide? How do you decide what is a "good" amount of ammo to purchase?

I want to know who sold them 180,000 rounds of ammo, no questions asked.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for no restrictions a la 2A, but this should have raised someone's eyebrows at the ammo distributor.

Fremont County, Colorado. (Canon City)
There is no ID requirement to purchase ammunition in Utah last time I purchased ammo here, but this sounds like a cash deal. This was probably set up ahead of time although our local dealers keep huge stocks of ammunition on hand. We burn through a lot of it and Mormons believe in food/ammo storage.

Last time I was there was to watch Jurassic park at the drive in/hotel movie theater.

I didn't realize there was a (federal) law restricting aliens/visitors regarding ammo, or straw ammo buyers earlier in this thread. These guys might be in trouble I guess.

So when we start offing cartel members in Mexico, understand there are armed cells here in the US who will likely retaliate. Not saying don't do it, just saying be alert.

I agree. If I were the seller, that sale wouldn't have happened. Or, maybe I call the feds after the sale so they can intercept; Win-win.

Although an unpopular action on this board, even if they had permanent resident visas, with their "story" I would have seized the ammo anyway.

Mexican nationals bought ammo in Utah that was destined for Pueblo Colorado? I don't understand that.

I'd bet a dollar the ATF knew this was going down and helped facilitate the sting.
