" The administration demanded changes to policies and governance due to allegations of antisemitism, illegal DEI. Harvard called the directives unconstitutional."

" Harvard University officials on Monday rejected Trump administration demands that the school yield to extensive government oversight and make sweeping changes to governance, admissions and hiring practices, calling the directives unlawful and unconstitutional."

" The administration responded Monday night by saying it would freeze more than $2 billion in federal funding to the Ivy League school.
The government's demands, received by Harvard on Friday after the administration had previously announced a review of nearly $9 billion in federal funding to Harvard, are part of the administration's crackdown on what it calls rampant antisemitism and leftist ideology on college campuses."
"… Harrison Fields, a spokesperson for the White House, said universities are not entitled to federal funding.…
" Harvard or any institution that wishes to violate Title VI is, by law, not eligible for federal funding."
///

Harvard has a $53 billion endowment. They also have a history of antisemitism. Let them use their own money.

With a 53 billion dollar endowment, Harvard shouldn't be getting a dime of federal funding.

Harvard is the worst of the worst. An arrogant left wing think tank that spreads communism and antisemitism across the globe.
But I actually like them not wanting gov funding. Let them do without. The gov should even be in the business of funding universities. That's exactly how we got to the problem we do with higher education.

The above is not accurate. The lawsuit against Hillsdale was brought by students and was filed in 2023.

Private schools, especially with endowments this large, should not be receiving any Federal funding for operations.

Harvard is just one of many universities who get federal funds for research. The money is not to for the school's operations. It goes to fund things like cancer research.

This relationship with the Fed has existed for a long time.

What do we get out of it- We get better medicine and advancements in areas that would otherwise not have the funds to do this long term work.

I looked into why doesn't private sector fund this - The issue with the private sector is that the return on the investment can be over many, many years and many private funding would want a faster return. The Fed takes a long term approach.

Address the issues you see but cutting off the funding only hurts America in the long term. As you can guess Harvard attracts the best researchers who we want doing research for us.

Why do you think the US has way more Nobel award winners than any other country and it's not even close - federal research money. This money benefits us.

Again- address issues in a rationale manner.

Yes, like cutting off USAID.

Per DDG Assist:
Quote:

Harvard University's endowment is valued at approximately $51.977 billion as of fiscal year 2024. This makes it the largest academic endowment in the world.
They should use their own funds to replace the federal ones (from the working class) to sustain critical cancer research, imho. And I favor the Harvard Management Company losing their tax-exempt status so that they can also pay their fair share.

Do the researchers have to pass Harvard's new remedial math class?

If Harvard wants Federal research money, then cut out the racial discrimination and hate. It's simple!

This is purely Harvard's doing!

You're not funding leftists. You're funding scientific research. Maybe their ideology is left- I don't know. What I know is I care about their discoveries.

Their research enabled using a pig's kidney in a human last year which is huge because we never have enough organs available. Unfortunately they did have to take it out after 130 days but they learned a lot and maybe the next time it goes even better..

Their research was a breakthrough is GLB1 and that has helped tens of thousands of Americans with obesity.

Their research has helped discover news ways to diagnose Alzheimer's earlier.

I'm only doing some cursory googling to find this.

Their research benefits tons of Americans.

Why are only certain flavors of racism to be condemned, while other flavors of racism to be celebrated?

I'd rather never have another scientific discovery from Harvard than to fund and promote hate and racism. But you do you.

Yes, a few billion in Aggieland's case, with comparative pennies for research.

Another irony is that Obama used Title IX threats to get schools to take away due process rights via kangaroo courts for sexual assault allegations. Yet, today, the left is terribly worried about illegal alien gang members getting due process protections.
Quote:

This is a curious kind of "independence" that Harvard claims to defend. If Harvard had been independent in the first place, the federal government wouldn't have any say over its operations. By receiving federal grant money for research, student loans to subsidize its tuition, and other federal monies, Harvard has essentially accepted federal oversight in how the school operates. This is not a new concept; every administration has used the threat of suspension of federal funding to enforce its interpretation of federal laws and regulations in campus policies, especially Titles Vi, VII, and IX.

One of the most significant flexes of that authority came from Barack Obama, whose administration used the threat to force schools to reduce or eliminate due-process protections in cases of alleged sexual harassment and assault. Schools set up kangaroo courts and railroaded accused students in a manner befitting the Salem witch trials for years. Trump reversed those demands in his first term only to have Joe Biden re-impose them, along with federal demands on pronoun usage. And this is apart from the usual federal "suggestions" on curricula, credentialing, and other aspects of policy in Academia, including especially the requirement to hire administrators by the boatload for compliance.
This will take time to play out but I think this concluding graf at hotair is right:

Quote:

At some point, a federal judge will order Trump to restore funding, and this case will wend its way to the Supreme Court, which will likely quash the order. Harvard is not entitled to federal funding if it refuses to comply with the administration's interpretations of civil-rights laws. However, it would be far cleaner for the administration and the Republicans in Congress to put an end to all federal funding for higher education, as I argued in October 2023 in my essay, "Decolonize Academia Now!" The federal government has no constitutional authority to subsidize colleges and universities, and the 60-year experiment in doing so has transformed Academia into an indoctrination center for the Left, corrupted education to the core, and created disastrous follow-on effects in primary and secondary education.

Put all colleges and universities on the Hillsdale plan. Let them survive with true pricing signals, and enforce civil-rights laws through the Department of Justice in a sane and rational manner. That will not just end the problems, but will cleanly eliminate the entitlement mentality currently gripping Academia.
And again, Trump didn't just arbitrarily terminate this funding, Harvard decided it didn't need to comply with the terms of the civil rights protections the US gov't provided with the funding. This is simply Harvard's choice, not Trump's.
