How many more before we can make room for Texans on campus and stop sending our freshmen to Galveston and other campuses.
The majority of foreign students at TAMU are post graduates.
so they dont take up any space on campus?
Not undergraduate "space"

Your argument fails of many fronts. I doubt there is an insignificant amount of undergrad foreign students. Regardless, space is space. Grad space can be taking up under grad space. I also reject your premise that foreign students get grad spots over Texans in a state funded school.

There are roughly 278,000 Chinese students at American universities right now!

Universities love foreign students because they often are rich foreign kids that pay full tuition. Especially grad school.

This is something my professors told me when I was looking into engineering grad school.

Universities are businesses.
Graduate level research requires money.

A colleague at A&M that works in cybersecurity said that you can pretty much bet that any Chinese national at A&M is either knowingly or unknowingly spying for the CCP. FBI just raided a lab over in Ag last month and not only the prof but his Chinese grad students were involved in intellectual property theft.

Friend has a story from college with a Chinese student looking for roommates offered to pay 6 months rent upfront cash. Turns out he was sent to spy or being coerced into spying for China, and he flipped and wanted to run from his government. FBI got involved.

My son, Class of '97, had a Chinese student for a dorm roommate one semester. Said he had been in the red Chinese army and had combat wounds. Apparently he barely spoke any English and was pretty weird and reclusive. He never learned what the guys major was and he didn't seem to go to class much. Things that make you wonder….

We have some of the best colleges in the world.

The international students you typically see are the cream of the crop, among the smartest in their populations. Countries send them here and they go back home well educated in their field of study. It's not unusual to see presidents and prime ministers of small countries with American diplomas.
Trump will fix it.

You have no clue about how much fraud that happens to get into US Universities. Many people know how to game the system and get into no name US universites which are an entry point to high paying US jobs. Everyone is complicit including Universities and US corps and US Govt. Entire thing is a scam.,

My commencement convocation speech was given by the President of the a South American Republic who was an Aggie.

I hear people arguing that these foreign students are essentially subsidizing tuition for American students, bc the foreign students pay full cost.

But don't our taxes go to fund public universities in Texas? Which is why tuition is cheaper for in-state students? And if that's the case, they can eff right off about foreign students subsidizing us. The thousands and thousands of tax dollars we pay that go towards state universities is exponentially more than the full cost a foreigner is paying.

I agree with you but it is nuanced. Depends on the country. From Pakistan, the people who come are all rich and upper class. From India, it is from all classes and from some parts of India, they fake degrees and other stuff to get admits. I know this from some people who came here like that.

The argument that the universities depend on that full non resident amount of tuition is pretty weak. The difference they pay is miniscule compared to other forms of income to A&M. It's just another piece of the pie that helps hide the true cost of an A&M education? Fees, housing and other add ons end up being way more than tuition in a lot of cases.

A&M and other American Universities were great institutions way before we started bringing thousands of foreigners over to attend. They provided affordable avenues for education that actually produced students who came out with skills and degrees that advanced the American dream and economy.

Over the past 30 or 40 years, that dynamic has morphed into the bloated, woke and overly political institutions we have today.

The expense factor really got bad when the federal government took all the risk off of banks by backing federal student loans with no risk to the lending institutions. Suddenly there was all these extra funds available and the universities, instead of keeping their tuition and fees somewhat reasonable maxed their potential revenue to match the extra funds that were now guaranteed by the federal government.

No wonder universities pump out a lot of socialist. By and large, they are socialist institutions that don't play by the laws of economics. They depend on a system that encourages the most amount of students at the highest prices that can be charged to match the federally backed student loan program.

I sometimes wonder if current economic professors point this out in their classes as it would directly affect their careers and employers if more of the general populace knew how it worked?

I agree. But having a large number of foreign students allows you to keep professors or lecturers that would otherwise have empty classes. This is what is really driving it. Its like a self perpetuating bureaucracy.

For example, a lot of chinese students will take not only remedial english classes, but also math classes irrespective of their major. There are fewer language barriers in math, so while they get better at english, they take a class that doesnt require much language.

There's going to be a lot of empty classrooms. And maybe this is what finally breaks the college tuition bubble.

If Universities are big business, then empty classrooms ought to be like empty stores--- close them up. Of course since Universities operate on socialistic scale this doesnt happen. Empty classroom being paid for is like the feather bedding unions-- keeping a fireman on the diesel train.
