I've noted before, on other threads about the economy and weird spikes of items, that here on the NE side of San Antonio one morning it will be $2.4x9 and then when I pass by in the afternoon (about 1500hrs) it's shot up to $2.8x9.

Today, this morning at about 0400hrs, the HEB on Thousand Oaks and Nacogdoches was $2.529. At about 1500, it was $2.99.

Dafuq, yo?

What's going on in the last couple months that is driving these surges?

Switch over to the summer blends perhaps?
"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." - Sir Winston Churchill

This has been happening since January, but it's possible....I guess.

Could be rolling the dice on price and hoping they average out.. cheaper in morning and higher at evening prime time, that's up to the owner how he markets the prices

Gasonline season blends should be starting soon, May 1st I believe but they could switch ealy but no later then May 1st. Summer blends are more, lower vapor pressure which basically means no to very little cheaper C5s which raise vapor pressure (it's the hissing you hear when you open the tank)

Summer blends typically switch over in May

But the price stays higher but trends downward again towards that $2.4x9 - $2.5x9 range again over the weeks then BAM! a 40+ cent increase in a few hours.

Any chance it could be a reflection of the markets uncertainty?

Just spitballing here.

The station is watching you and raising their prices when your car gets near them ..

not sure what is going on to be honest? Crazy

Never know, maybe even aliens are changing prices ?

I live in NC San Antonio and have noticed the exact same thing happening. $2.49/$2.59 in the AM and $2.99 later the same day. The closest station to my house is a Circle K… I wonder if it's those stores in particular?

There's a station by my house on the NW side that will gradually lower the price during the week, but Sunday night, it jumps to 2.99.9 every week.
On occasion when prices are trending much lower, they'll only go up to 2.89.9.
This all no matter how low it might go through the week.

Demand pricing?

Sunday evening is the least expensive gas.

Prices increase early Monday morning. Sometimes by 20+% Why? Because people procrastinate or forget about their low tanks until they're on their way to work on Monday morning.

A certain Valero on Nacogdoches Rd in San Antonio is notorious for it.

More people stop on the way home from work, kid sport practices or whatever than on the way into work in the morning.

I noticed the same at HEB in Dripping Springs today. $2.52 at 9:00 AM and $2.99 at 11:00 AM.

I've noticed this. I drove six miles to my parents house in far north dallas. Every station on the way was in the $2.50 range. I stayed two hours and intended to get gas on the way home. Every station was then $2.89 to $2.95. What? How? The next morning the QT was down to $2.57

I think it's more a function of GasBuddy and the price comparison apps. Get in low in the morning so you're the best station, then rise throughout the day so people are caught unaware. Few people are going to leave once they are next to a pump.

Hey smarty, that takes time. Once we saturate the market, prices will plunge. You do know that from the ground to the refinery to the pump takes time, don't you? Not to mention what is happening globally as we enter markets.

I'd say prices dropping under $2 a gallon in Texas is very possible by the EOY.

San Antonio market is fed by pipeline to about four or five terminals. Valero and Flint Hills, I believe.

So any outages at the Corpus or Three Rivers refineries will cause a spike in price, but also of the terminals run out of gasoline they have to raise prices to slow demand until resupply (or more accurately - if my station has fuel and yours doesn't - well, price goes up.)

The I35 corridor is one of the fastest growing populations in the US. Valero and Flint Hills built terminals in Taylor to get fuel into the area via pipeline, but I don't know what capacity those lines run daily.

However, a price changing every morning to afternoon and then back down again sounds like maybe your "perception"
Is that it's doing that a lot, but maybe it was just one day or two max.

What were diesel prices doing at this same time? They supply off the same lines.

Changing grades to summer shouldn't cause up and down morning to afternoon on multiple days.

If, if the price fluctuations are true then some stations are doing peak demand pricing algos or something. I have no idea if that is legal or not so I won't weigh in on that part of it.

Oil companies are going to fight tough and nail to prevent WTI from dropping below $50/barrel. Which is what it will take to get sub $2 gas.

Rig count is actually down about 5% since last March. And continuing to drop.

It's not just SA. I live in DFW and have noticed similar patterns at the gas stations near where I live.

Don't worry . Saudi has you covered. You'll be back to $1.50/ gallon or lower prices in the next month or two when they try their second attempt at flooding the market.

Bonus: you'll get a sweet deal on lifted HD trucks from the rigs shutting down.

My local HEB occasionally has to turn off pumps because the tanker truck has not arrived. Possibly when tanks get below a certain level the price increase happens

The gas buddy app theory also makes sense

Looks like we're still not "Drill, baby, drill!" enough. I honestly thought that with a Republican president coming in we'd see gas prices drop like they always have, at least as far back as W's first term.

They raise the price at intervals that correspond with their renewal contracts with their suppliers so that they build the cash to pay for said future supply if there is an increase. If the new contract is the same as the old or lower then prices start gradually coming down ........rinse and repeat.....rinse and repeat.

I noticed the same thing.

Two gas stations across the street from each other. One was 2.99 and the other was 2.49. By the afternoon, the 2.49 was also 2.99.

That's a pretty big jump in one day.
