So my favorite pizza joint gets closed in your world because they have an Italian flag
My grandfather, the son of Italian immigrants who came during the Italian diaspora, and WWII veteran, would be ashamed to fly the Italian flag. My grandparents flew a large American flag in their yard.
Although I can only speak for my family, it seems to me the earlier generation of immigrants had an overwhelming desire to assimilate and be seen as Americans. They further detested the portrayal of Italian mafia in film, although my brother and I loved it. They wanted to be seen as good Americans.
Edit:
This kind of thing

came much later, with the increasing rise of individuality and desire to stand out, to be different.
It didn't occur to me until later in life that I grew up in a mostly Italian neighborhood. But nobody thought anything of it. Nobody thought of themselves as Italian.
It was only decades later that I started to see people put flags of their countries of origin on their cars and such. I have a cousin ten years younger whose social media name is Corleone. He really plays that up - and his aunt, my mother, thinks it idiotic.
