What do we know about Glenn Hegar? I see he graduated 1993 and is a Republican. Will he get some of the DEI out of our campuses?

Dude is the head of Texas' version of the Department of Revenue, and is more of a Romney/McCain Republican than a populist MAGA Republican.
This board will want him fired on day 1

We'll see what he can do. Say what you will about John Sharp, but we've never seen the growth in our university system footprint, research, overall system value, or university rankings and degree reputation that we have experienced during his 14 year run. Many people try to discredit him because of his political affiliation but the truth is that he was uniquely positioned in large part due to that affiliation to gather tremendous support from both sides of the aisle on both the state and federal level to allow him to elevate Texas A&M in all areas. His political acumen will be difficult to reproduce going forward. Hopefully, we can keep that momentum, but time will tell. It has truly been a golden age for our university system overall, including the flagship. And before you start, I am a Republican. I've had the opportunity to witness from inside over the last few years, and I quickly recognized that he is extremely gifted in this area. Flame away if you choose.

Huh, it's grown WAY too much and too fast. What is good about that?!?
True but how much of that is a simply of population growth in Texas combined with the fact A&M is a flagship public university and it simply makes little sense to pay out of state tuition to go elsewhere? Texas was the largest growing state from 2010-2020. I'm not disputing your point but there are other factors at play causing for a rise in demand and thus a rise in the level of candidates we can and do admit.jpb1999 said:

If you're solely focused on undergraduate enrollment at the main College Station campus and how that relates to infrastructure, sure. President Welsh has announced a 5 year growth freeze to allow for infrastructure to catch up. I've been sitting in meetings for the last 3 days that cover the entire university system and the status and numbers regarding it all. While traffic, classroom, and parking issues have clearly been an issue, plans are in place to address all of the above. I will also say that the idea of A&M becoming a "diploma mill" is categorically false. The truth is that as enrollment has grown, the quality of students being admitted has actually continued to narrow and improve. That's how huge the demand is for our school. Be proud of that. We have simultaneously gotten larger AND grown our rankings amd reputation nationally in regard to quality of education. Truly an amazing feat.

Sounds like he is one of the few Texas politicians that didn't endorse Trump.
Hey John. What's up? Gates had a better user name.NattyOrBust said:

Looked into him. All sorts of news articles about it. Trump endorsed him in 2018 and 2022. He didn't publicly, at least, endorse Trump in 2024.
Well said. Agree on all counts. Sharp has been great for A&M.NattyOrBust said:

Glenn is not a Romney R. He is more of a Reagan R. He carried the Heartbeat bill in the Senate that Wendy Davis filibustered. Romney/McCain would never do that. Glenn is a conservative, no he is not a populist. He focusses on his job and doesn't get dragged into distracting BS type stuff. Iv'e known and worked with him of and on for 20 years. I believe he will be a steady hand and push the system to bigger and better things. He is very well respected in Austin and that is critical.rgag12 said:
