This has been posted before, but it's a reminder that population collapse is probably the number one global issue and it's mostly ignored. Zeihan has started talking about it much more in his vids.

Unless they want to take some illegal immigrants off our hands (they don't) there isn't much we can do for them.

But in general a country can influence their population rate by providing various incentives to do so if they were so inclined. Has Japan made any attempts to correct their problem?

No, they generally can't. Asia has been trying this for years. When the government interferes with child policy they can't reverse it. It hasn't worked anywhere.

Edit: western nations too, where women are raised as feminist employees first, they start opting out of relationships and child bearing and don't go back.

Many. The current culture and economy there just are not conducive to child rearing. They've actually been in a slow economic decline for decades.

South Korea is not all that far behind in terms of demographics.

China right after that. Then you get to Western Europe.

Their civilization will collapse long before that. China's won't make it out of this century. Societal structure and cohesion collapses long before populations die out. You just need to reach a threshold of elderly to young adults in your society that becomes unsustainable.

It is sad because Japanese are an exceptional culture. They would be pretty far down the list of my choices of cultures to wink out of existence. In fact, those toxic cultures seem to be the only ones growing.

But Japan and South Korea have the government systems and economies to hold out longer as their demographic decline presses on. The CCP is far more at risk much earlier in the process because of the nature of their system. Their economy is a house of cards and their government is basically just one guy everyone is afraid to give bad news to. They will be caught whistling right off the cliff.

Yoshida is extending a less than a decade trend to 700 years? That is not defensible from a statistical standpoint.

At least the Asian countries are girding for the future. They'll shrink until young folks can afford kids again, at which point a portion will begin having them again.

"The west" has been importing 3rd worlders to keep consumption up, but the result is cultural suicide.

"The elites" are globalists who value homogenized "modernity" where they get the same amenities and culture wherever they go… and they ignorantly assume the service caste are interchangeable cogs whose values don't matter.

I still like Japan's chances of cultural survival far more than Europe's.

I don't personally understand the thinking that this planets human population needs to continue to grow at any material rate. We have multiplied and subdued the planet.

Population has exploded Ilover the last two centuries and (it seems) an ever increasing % are not producers but rather feeding off the system.

Someone is going to have to explain it to me like I'm a second grader why not having more people on this planet is an existential crisis.

I'm no humans are evil wannabe bill gates trying to kill off humanity, but don't see why more is better

Nations do not have to disappear when they shrink. They just contract for a time and can expand again. Where it becomes especially an issue is as others have said, when you have infrastructures and especially socialist schemes that are dependent on numbers itself just to keep working (Social Security is one example here) So certain types of governments can't continue, and that's where it gets dicey. The other thing is if in its shrunken state they become excessively militarily vulnerable. Good location and technology can balance some of that, but not all. As an island nation a nuke armed Japan probably can defend itself for any time needed to resume growth again but this luxury does not always exist or work.

The real myth is that populations need to keep growing.

No reason a country cannot reach a nice equilibrium of neither continual growth nor continual decline.

Elon has some weird fetish with more people in more places on more planets. If you want to criticize Elon on something legitimate this would be an area.

Japan will only disappear if its leaders fail to lead. By the time a population decline had any real impact there will most certainly be technological / scientific improvements to 3d print as many Japanese as you need to keep going.

The better opportunity here is to email DOGE and have them defund population studies and theoretical anthropologists who write nonsense articles on Japan disappearing.
