Love it. Many countries have this path to citizenship. About time we give illegals another way to become citizens and get benefits instead of stealing them.

There are plenty of people who could be enabled to afford $5 mil to purchase citizenship that I'm not sure I trust the government to properly vet on an indefinite basis once this becomes legal. Not sure I'm on board.

Not worried about Trump but, would you trust a dim administration not to screw this up down the line at some future point?

The ones I've heard of were more like "Invest $1,000,000 here and you can stay."

US already has a form of this under EB5 and E2 visas. A lot of other countries have a similar golden ticket visa scheme including AU/S/NZ, and UAE, Portugal, some Caribbean nations and other places with private banking tax friendly legal regimes.

We don't know that 5M is the right price. There must be a provision to increase it if too many people take it up. Maybe we can at some point jack it up to 10M

At the end of the day this appears to simplify an immigration pathway & potentially raise money that could pay down debt (will be curious if it's actually earmarked in a particular way), all while targeting those individuals with capital resources that could be deployed domestically (growing the economy) or that would merit sponsorship by corporate interests willing to foot the bill (and are thus probably pretty smart cookies).

Seems like a reasonable idea.

I was born in a European country, but am a US citizen by birth.

When I was 18, the consulate of that country invited me for a meeting. He offered me dual citizenship for a price.

The rent was too damn high.

Just think about the previous presidency.
The prev presidency would give a foreigner $5MM, on the condition that they spend that money to enter the country legally. So, we give them $5MM, they give us $5MM. Just rinse and repeat. A **** ton of foreigners could enter at no cost to us or them.

The flood gates would be open wide.
